2027 Election: Peter Obi Breaks Silence on Viral Gym Injury Report

A viral report claimed Peter Obi was hospitalised after allegedly breaking his neck in a gym accident. His spokesman has now revealed what actually happened.

The camp of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has dismissed a viral report claiming that the former Anambra State governor was hospitalised after suffering a broken neck in a gym accident.

The report, accompanied by photographs circulating on social media, sparked reactions among supporters and political observers ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

However, Obi’s spokesman, Idris Zekeri, described the claim as completely false, insisting that the photographs being circulated were doctored.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Zekeri said he was with Obi earlier that morning before the former governor boarded a flight for an international engagement.

“There is zero iota of truth in that rumour. No such thing happened,” Zekeri said, according to The Punch.

He added that Obi was in good health and had travelled out of the country, although he declined to disclose the destination of the flight.

“I was with His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, at about 7 am today (Sunday) when he got on a flight for an international engagement,” he said.

“But I can assure you that he is safe, sound and in the finest state of health, mind, body, soul and spirit.”

Zekeri accused political opponents of deliberately spreading the report as part of efforts to undermine Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He described the development as an attempt by desperate opponents to create false narratives about the NDC candidate, adding that Obi’s camp was not concerned by the report.

The spokesman also explained that details of Obi’s destination were being withheld because he had not been authorised to disclose them.

“I have not been cleared to release such details. That’s also because it is a long-haul flight. As I am talking to you, I am sure he is still on that flight, which I believe should be 16 hours,” he said.

The controversy comes as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with social media increasingly becoming a major platform for political campaigns, claims and counterclaims.

The viral gym injury report has since been rejected by Obi’s camp, which maintains that the former Anambra governor remains in sound health.
