Onuigbo’s Climate Change Act Was FG’s Most Significant Effort on Climate Change

The Climate Change Act sponsored by the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, and candidate of the APC for Abia Central Senatorial District, Rep. Sam Onuigbo, has been described as Nigeria’s most significant effort towards climate change mitigation and adaptation between 2015-2023.

The Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja, on Monday, February 6, 2023, on the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR in the environment sector between 2015-2023.

According to Abdullahi; “The most significant action taken towards playing our role in climate change mitigation and adaptation is the signing of the Climate Change Act into law by Mr. President in November 2021 and the subsequent establishment of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) as well as the appointment of an administrative machinery for a 5-year renewable tenure.”

The Act which makes in-depth provisions for multi-stakeholder responsibilities for climate action, nature-based solutions, carbon trading, investments and research into renewable energy, sets a timeline for net zero attainment, funding for climate action, high level administrative and enforcement body, is Nigeria’s first standalone legal framework to address the devastating impacts of climate change and usher the nation into a more sustainable and robust future.
