Okon-Aku Community Issues Strong Warning to Promise Uzoma Okoro Over False Narratives, Defamation
The leadership of Okon-Aku Autonomous Community has finally broken its silence following the devastating January 2026 crisis, issuing a strong warning against misinformation, defamation, and sensational narratives circulating online. As investigations continue, the community insists that truth—not propaganda—must guide public discourse and justice for victims.”
“The Okon-Aku Autonomous Community in Ohafia LGA, Abia State, has condemned the spread of false narratives and defamation surrounding its January 2026 crisis, urging the public to rely on verified investigations while reaffirming its commitment to justice, peace, and accountability.
The Traditional Council/Cabinet and the Development Union of Okon-Aku Ohafia Autonomous Community address the public regarding the continued propagation of misleading lies, shameful falsehood, and defamatory narratives by a certain hireling called Promise Uzoma Okoro, concerning the tragic events that recently befell our dear community.
Between the 2nd and 3rd of January 2026, Okon-Aku experienced a deeply tragic crisis and unprovoked attacks that shook the very fabric of our community. The crisis and dastardly attacks left in their trail acts of arson, life-threatening injuries, displacement of persons, and most heartbreakingly, the loss of a promising youth, Akuma Akwu Igwe.
These resultant losses are profound to the families of victims and the entire community, therefore requiring serious and detailed attention from all responsible authorities to unravel and resolve the very intricate and tense situation in the community.
In response to these grave incidents, the Abia State Government acted swiftly by setting up an administrative panel of inquiry tasked with uncovering the root causes of the crisis, to ensure that justice is served and peace returns to the community. This matter has also been duly reported to the Nigerian Police and other relevant security agencies, resulting in several arrests as part of ongoing investigations.
During this period, the people of Okon-Aku have remained remarkably restrained from media engagements. This decision is guided by a firm commitment to allowing the administrative inquiry and other investigating processes to take their natural courses without interference or sensationalism.
Regrettably, Promise Uzoma Okoro and his co-travelers have chosen to persistently trivialize the crisis, disseminating repeated falsehoods and misleading narratives under the guise of “seeking justice for Akuma.” We wish to clarify several critical points:
- The Okon-Aku situation must not be handled like a political game within and outside the media spaces. It is a serious existential crisis, deeply and dangerously consequential to our ethnography.
- Online false news peddlers like Promise Uzoma Okoro, who are not members of Okon-Aku Autonomous Community or Ohafia and who may be crying more than we, the bereaved, need to do better by conducting deeper and serious fact-based investigations of the matters in Okon, then help the investigating teams with any facts and not spew fabrications on social media daily.
- Promise Uzoma Okoro and his likes may not have visited Okon-Aku Autonomous Community (the five villages and twenty-six compounds and their heads) to conduct any form of legitimate, broad, and balanced investigation for reportage as trained journalists would do. All his claims are clearly based on hearsay, unhinged speculations, or crass parochialism.
- Promise Uzoma Okoro’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for truth and community dignity, aligning with certain individuals for possibly some pecuniary gains rather than genuine concern for justice.
- His repeated public misrepresentations, including defaming leaders and the memory of our deceased son, Akuma Akwu Igwe, are deeply offensive, morally reprehensible, and legally actionable.
The Traditional Council/Cabinet and the Development Union of Okon-Aku Ohafia Autonomous Community therefore issue a firm warning to Promise Uzoma Okoro and others alike to immediately cease and desist from these defamatory activities and grave violations.
Okon-Aku is committed to working closely with government authorities, the law enforcement, and all relevant agencies to resolve the crisis and ensure that justice is achieved for all affected persons and the community.
We further wish to inform the public that, at the appropriate time, redress shall be sought against all falsehoods, violations, and defamation against our revered traditional institution, such as to expose, correct, and hold the likes of Promise Uzoma Okoro accountable for their illegitimate and irresponsible propagations regarding the Okon-Aku crisis.
Again, the community remains unwavering in its commitment to justice, peace, and healing and will not allow the dignity of our people or the memory of our lost son to be emotionally insulted by barefaced liars, manipulators, and opportunistic social media hawks.
Let it be known: Okon-Aku is a community that values truth, respects the rule of law, and honors its traditions. Any attempt to undermine these principles will be met with the full force of the law.
For and on behalf of
The Traditional Cabinet/Council and the Okon-Aku Development Union, Okon-Aku Autonomous Community, Ohafia LGA.
Signed:
Chief U. E. Udensi
(for Traditional Rulers Council & Nnaka IV Cabinet)
Comrade Okorie Kama
(O.D.U President)
