A tragic incident on Thursday cast a shadow over the 70th birthday celebration of the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Azinge, SAN, as the Odogwu (Chief Warrior) of Asaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah, slumped and reportedly died at the reception.

According to an eyewitness, “Oduah suddenly collapsed at the reception ground, causing panic among guests and dignitaries present at the event.”

The unexpected death has thrown the Asaba community and the entire Delta State capital into mourning.

Earlier during the celebration, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had extolled the virtues of the Asagba, describing his reign as one defined by “peace, humility, and understanding.” The governor spoke during a thanksgiving Mass held at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, West-End, Asaba, in honour of the monarch’s platinum jubilee.

The governor noted that Asagba’s life reflected divine grace, saying:
“I am very happy for this celebration because it is important that when God takes you to a particular level in life, you come back to appreciate Him. This thanksgiving is special because it is not just another birthday; it is an offering of gratitude for seventy years of divine mercy, strength, and grace.”

Governor Oborevwori further quoted Proverbs 16:31, noting that the monarch’s grey hair is “a crown of glory gained through a righteous life,” as he prayed for continued wisdom, long life, and strength for the revered royal father.

In his homily, the Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, described the celebration as a moment of deep reflection and gratitude, drawing from Psalm 90.
“The Bible reminds us that seventy is the sum of our years. It is a time to look back with gratitude and look forward with faith,” he said.

Cardinal Onaiyekan praised the Asagba for his steadfastness, compassion, and service to humanity, describing him as “a true monarch who has served God and humanity with love, integrity, and commitment.”

The tragic death of the Odogwu has however overshadowed the festivities, leaving the community in shock.
