Nashville, Tennessee – A devastating crime has shaken the community as 8-year-old Demeria Hollingsworth was found dead, allegedly suffocated by her 12-year-old cousin while sleeping at their grandmother’s house in Nashville, Tennessee.
According to authorities, the horrific act was committed after a dispute over an iPhone. Security footage revealed the older girl using her body weight to suffocate Demeria, who struggled to survive during the attack.
District Attorney General Frederick Agee described the crime as “unimaginable” and “one of the most disturbing violent acts” his office has prosecuted.
The 12-year-old suspect, who has just turned 13 is being held in a juvenile detention facility in Rutherford County and faces charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The case is expected to be transferred to adult court, which could result in a longer sentence.
Demeria’s family is struggling to cope with the loss, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help fund her funeral service, raising over $17,000 so far.
“This is intense. It’s just not something that happens here,” Agee said. “I consider this to be one of the most disturbing violent acts committed by either an adult or juvenile that my office has prosecuted.”
A memorial has been set up in front of the grandmother’s home, with balloons in Demeria’s favorite colors, stuffed with animals, and nail polish bottles.
The community is in shock, and the case has raised concerns about youth violence and the need for support and resources for families.
