Breaking! Nollywood Actor Francis Duru is Dead

Nollywood is mourning a veteran screen figure following a reported family announcement of his death at 57.

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has reportedly died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, according to a statement attributed to his family.

The statement, shared on the actor’s verified Instagram page, announced his passing in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.

Duru’s reported death comes about two years after he lost his youngest son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.

Early Life and Education

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed his primary and secondary education before relocating to Nigeria for his university studies.

He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.

Acting Career and Rise to Fame

Duru began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, a film directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko.

However, he gained wider recognition in 1995 after featuring in Rattlesnake, an action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. He played the character Ahanna in the film.

Over the years, Duru established himself as a familiar face in the Nigerian film industry, earning several awards and honours for his contributions to Nollywood.

He was also named a United Nations ambassador of peace in recognition of his influence on young people.

In 2020, the actor won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Family Life

Duru married Adokiye in 2003, and their union produced four children.

The family suffered a painful loss in August 2024 when their youngest son, Ifeanyi, died.

His reported passing marks another difficult moment for the family, while his decades-long career has left him known to audiences across Nigeria’s film industry.
