Tinubu Moves to Clear Arrears as IGP Disu Pushes Welfare Reforms
President Tinubu is moving to address outstanding arrears owed to retired police officers, as IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu pushes for reforms to improve retirement benefits and welfare.
After years of service to the nation, retired police officers may be approaching a turning point as President Tinubu moves to address outstanding arrears, while IGP Disu pushes for reforms to improve their welfare.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has stepped up efforts to address the welfare challenges facing retired police officers, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration moves to tackle outstanding arrears and improve retirement benefits.
The initiative is aimed at addressing longstanding concerns over the welfare of former personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly delays in retirement payments and other challenges affecting their financial security after years of service.
The proposed measures form part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve the welfare of retired officers through administrative reforms, more efficient payment processes and better management of retirement entitlements.
To facilitate the process, President Tinubu reportedly constituted a high-level committee comprising representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Budget Office, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, and the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
The committee is expected to recommend sustainable solutions to the challenges surrounding outstanding payments and retirement benefits.
Meanwhile, police authorities are updating the records of retired personnel through a nationwide verification exercise. The exercise is intended to address discrepancies in existing records, improve documentation and ensure that eligible beneficiaries are properly captured.
Disu has reaffirmed the importance of prioritising officers’ welfare beyond their years in active service, noting that those who dedicated their careers to protecting lives and property deserve financial security and dignity in retirement.
The proposed reforms have raised hopes among retired police officers, many of whom have continued to seek the settlement of outstanding arrears and improvements in their retirement benefits.
However, the extent to which the measures will ease their concerns will depend on the outcome of the committee’s recommendations, the release of adequate funds and the timely implementation of approved reforms.
