Enugu Horror: Mother of Six Allegedly Publicly Raped by Husband, Gang-Raped, Banished After Reporting Domestic Abuse

A 34-year-old mother of six has alleged that her husband publicly raped her before she was allegedly gang-raped, brutally tortured, abandoned in an “evil forest,” and banished from her community in Enugu State after reporting years of domestic abuse. The disturbing allegations have triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for justice and accountability.

A 34-year-old mother of six was allegedly publicly raped by her husband, gang-raped by a mob, brutally tortured, abandoned in an “evil forest,” and later banished from her community in Enugu State after reporting alleged domestic violence. Rights group WACOL has condemned the incident and called for the arrest and prosecution of all suspects, protection for the survivor, and an investigation into the alleged roles of community leaders.

A 34-year-old mother of six has allegedly been banished from her community after surviving what has been described as a horrifying ordeal involving domestic violence, gang rape, mob torture and an attempted murder in Nenwe community, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The survivor’s identity has been withheld to protect her safety.

According to community sources who spoke with SaharaReporters, the woman and her family were allegedly excommunicated on the orders of the community’s traditional ruler (Igwe) and the President General (PG) after she reported the alleged crimes to the police.
“The Igwe and the President General are trying to cover up the matter to protect the image of the community,” one community source alleged.

“They allegedly went as far as issuing a decree banishing the woman and her family simply because they reported the matter to the police. It is a complete abuse of traditional authority.”
According to residents, the incident reportedly began after the survivor moved into a separate apartment to escape what they described as repeated and life-threatening domestic abuse by her husband, who allegedly assaulted both her and her mother.

A resident familiar with the incident alleged, “Her husband tracked her to her new apartment on the night of July 17, severely beat her and forced her to flee.

“When she escaped to her mother’s house, he allegedly followed her there, threatening to kill her if she remained. She had no option but to seek temporary refuge from a palm kernel trader who was one of her customers.”

Sources alleged that because the trader was married, he reportedly took the woman to a friend’s house for temporary shelter.

However, the friend allegedly conspired with another resident to lock both of them inside the house before alerting the woman’s husband.
According to the sources, the husband allegedly arrived with a violent mob, forced his way into the building and sexually assaulted his wife while others restrained the trader.

“The husband stormed the building with a mob, broke down the door and publicly raped his own wife while the trader was held down,” a source alleged.

The source further claimed that the husband allegedly took the woman’s money, purchased local gin and other alcoholic drinks for members of the mob and encouraged them to assault both victims.

Residents further alleged that the victims were stripped naked, beaten, humiliated and tortured. The woman’s head was allegedly shaved with broken bottles before she was dragged into what locals described as an “evil forest” and abandoned.

Another resident claimed, “She remained in the forest for three days, struggling to stay alive.
“She eventually crawled to a nearby road where Good Samaritans rescued her, contacted her sister and rushed her for medical treatment.”

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of the palm kernel trader who reportedly attempted to help the survivor remain unknown. Community members fear he may have been killed during the attack, although this has not been independently confirmed.

Reacting to the allegations, the Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL) condemned the reported incident, describing it as a grave violation of human dignity and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in Enugu State.

In a statement signed by its Senior Communications Officer, Ezugwu Bethel, the organisation disclosed that the survivor is currently receiving medical care at a police clinic while remaining out of public view because of security concerns.

“The Women’s Aid Collective has received with profound shock, outrage and deep sorrow reports of severe domestic violence, multiple rapes, mob torture, attempted murder and the subsequent banishment of a 34-year-old mother of six in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State,” the statement read.

“WACOL condemns these barbaric acts in the strongest possible terms.”

The organisation also accused the community leadership of allegedly victimising the survivor after she sought justice.

“To compound this atrocity, the Traditional Ruler (Igwe) and the President General (PG) allegedly banished the victim and her family simply because they reported the perpetrators to the police. This victim-blaming and unconstitutional banishment amounts to a gross abuse of power,” WACOL stated.

Furthermore, WACOL expressed concern over allegations that community leaders initially attempted to shield some of the suspects.

“We are deeply concerned by reports that the community’s Igwe initially used his influence to secure the release of the suspects before they were re-arrested,” the organisation alleged.
The rights group called on the Enugu State Commissioner of Police to ensure the arrest and prosecution of every suspect linked to the alleged crimes.

It also demanded an immediate search-and-rescue operation for the missing trader, adequate protection for the survivor and her family, and appropriate sanctions against any traditional or community leaders found to have obstructed justice.

The allegations remain under investigation, while authorities are yet to issue a comprehensive official response to the claims.
