Double Tragedy in Lagos: Man Dies Rescuing Toddler Who Fell Into Well

A desperate attempt to save a two-year-old child ended in tragedy in Lagos, as a man who entered a well to rescue the toddler was found dead. Emergency responders also struggled to recover the child’s body.

A Lagos community has been thrown into mourning after a man died while attempting to rescue a two-year-old child who fell into a domestic well at Abule Egba, with emergency responders unable to recover the toddler’s body.

The tragic incident occurred on Paul Street, inward Agbe Road, Abule Egba, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

According to the statement, the toddler, whose mother worked as a cleaner in the compound, accidentally fell into the well, prompting a resident of the community to attempt a rescue.

However, the man became trapped inside the well and could not climb out, turning the rescue attempt into another tragedy.

LASEMA said it received a distress call at 9:48 a.m. and immediately deployed its response team from the Igando Base to the scene.

Despite the emergency responders’ efforts, the man was recovered dead.

“The gallant rescuer who attempted the rescue was recovered deceased,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

The agency said the man’s remains were subsequently handed over to his relatives and members of the Hausa community for burial in accordance with their customs.

Rescue Operation Fails to Recover Toddler

LASEMA said its response team worked alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force to coordinate the rescue operation.

However, efforts to recover the toddler proved unsuccessful because of the large volume of water and thick mud at the bottom of the well.

According to the agency, dewatering efforts were undertaken but encountered operational difficulties, prompting the deployment of a specialist local diver to conduct a final search.

The diver reportedly confirmed that the child’s body had sunk deep into the mud and could no longer be recovered. Only one shoe belonging to the toddler was retrieved during the operation.

The agency said the operation was concluded following the specialist’s assessment and consultations with the affected family and community leaders.

LASEMA Warns Residents Against Unsecured Wells

LASEMA commiserated with the deceased man’s family and the Hausa community, describing his attempt to save the toddler as an act of uncommon bravery.

The agency also urged residents to take preventive measures by ensuring that wells and other potentially dangerous openings within residential premises were properly covered, raised and secured.

It particularly emphasised the need for extra precautions in homes where young children live.

The agency further advised residents to contact emergency responders through the toll-free emergency numbers 767 and 112 rather than attempt dangerous rescue operations that could lead to additional casualties.

The incident highlights the dangers posed by unsecured domestic wells and the importance of taking appropriate safety measures to protect children and other residents.
