Following the Federal government’s recent directive to shutdown schools, market places and all forms of social and religious gatherings in the country, consequent on Corona Virus, Abia governent has lamented that the impending panic would be more disastrous than the dreaded virus.
Abia Governent stressed that the tension, coupled with starvation would doubtlessly lead to the extinction of inhabitants of the state faster than the dreaded virus.
Addressing Journalists in Umuahia, the state’s capital, today, the Commissioner for Information, High Chief John Okiyi Kalu, (JOK) explained that FG’s resolutions in a bid to militate against the spread of COVID-19 would rather create more pandemonium for its citizenry.
He argued that Abia had no record of the outbreak of the disease in any part of the state let alone the spread of same, while disclosing that several preventive measures have been deployed by the government of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu towards protecting the lives of the people.
Speaking with an aura of confidence, Chief John Okiyi prided in God’s protection of the state, hence the nickname, ‘God’s own state’ and insisted that Abia had overtime been exempted from previous outbreaks of some infectious diseases, outlining that “this is also not the first infectious diseases Ebola came, it didn’t come to Abia, Monkey purse came, we didn’t suffer it in Abia. God is deeply helping us in Abia. He knows our strength and our weaknesses. No body should dispute the fact that this is God’s own state and there is no apology over that”, he thundered.
JOK who envisaged the impending dangers should such policy be implemented in the state, lamented that the state would rather witness more death occurrences than the dreaded disease.
In spite of the state’s dependency on the Almighty God, JOK maintained that the state believed also in the dignity of labour, saying
“in this state, we live and depend on God only but we’re also hard working. There is no single case of Corona virus in Abia state but we are raising three Isolation Centres in the state should Corona virus knock on our door because there are levels of protocols in managing the virus”, he said.
Meanwhile, he urged teachers in the state to maximize the opportunity to impact on the pupils and students sound personal hygiene, as well as put adequate measures in place to protect them.
In his words: “We started the current academic calendar two weeks ago. Secondly, we still have an opportunity that has been presented to us, use this opportunity to teach our children proper hygiene while we continue to pray for God to bless our efforts.”
