Chief Kalu Honored at Eluama Iriji Cultural Festival 2025

The annual Eluama Iriji and cultural Festival was held yesterday at the Eluama Civic Center, Nunya/Ogboro Isukwuato LGA, Abia State. A cherished tradition that symbolizes gratitude, renewal, and unity, took on added significance this year with the invitation of a distinguished philanthropist and politician Chief Dr Emeka Charles Kalu.

The festival, celebrated across many communities in Igboland, marks the harvest of the new yam crop and is deeply rooted in cultural heritage. Beyond feasting, it is a day of reflection, thanksgiving to God and the ancestors, and reaffirmation of communal ties.

The theme of this year’s Nkari Iriji Lecture is ELUOMA-OUR PROMISE LAND. The title draws contextual parallels with the biblical “Promised Land” of the jews. The concept of “Promise Land” can be summarized in the biblical phrase – A Land Flowing with Milk and Honey.

The presence of the invited philanthropist, known for his outstanding contributions to human development, and social empowerment, added glamour and weight to the occasion. His track record in philanthropy, ranging from educational scholarships and healthcare outreach to youth empowerment programs, made his invitation both symbolic and inspiring.

In his remarks, Chief Kalu expressed deep appreciation to the traditional rulers, elders, and the entire community for the honor. He noted that the New Yam Festival is not just about the harvest but also a reminder of unity, resilience, and the value of hard work. He further pledged his continued commitment to supporting initiatives that uplift the people, and generously donated the sum of 500,000(five hundred thousand naira).

Cultural displays, traditional dances, masquerade performances, and communal feasting filled the day joyfully. The event became a blend of heritage and modern leadership, showing how tradition and progress can walk hand in hand.

By welcoming the politician and philanthropist, the community not only celebrated its harvest but also reaffirmed its bond with leaders who embody service, generosity, and vision.
