Catholic Knight Renounces Christianity Over Church’s Failure to Acknowledge Ifeanyi Ubah’s Cathedral Contribution

“A Catholic knight has renounced Christianity after alleging that the Catholic Church failed to acknowledge late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s contributions to the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi.”

A Catholic knight, identified as Sir James Louise, popularly known as “Ebube Anaedo,” has publicly announced his withdrawal from Christianity, alleging that the Catholic Church failed to acknowledge the contributions of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to the construction of the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Nnewi, Anambra State.

The cathedral, described as a magnificent and colourful edifice, was inaugurated for worship on Tuesday, attracting prominent personalities, clergy, and faithful from across the state and beyond.

Findings revealed that the project was initiated by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who reportedly volunteered to fund and build the cathedral for the church. The project was said to have reached about 85 per cent completion before a new Bishop of the Nnewi Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Jonas-Benson Okoye, was posted to the diocese in 2022 and allegedly directed the senator to disengage from the project.

According to Daily Post, the directive reportedly led to tension between the bishop and the senator, with many observers insisting that due recognition should be accorded to Ubah for his significant financial and material contributions to the project.

However, controversy erupted during the cathedral’s inauguration when Sir James Louise openly protested, alleging that the late senator’s name was neither mentioned during the ceremony nor acknowledged in the official brochure as a major contributor.

In a video currently circulating on social media, Louise was seen emotionally distressed after the Mass, lamenting what he described as an injustice against the late senator. He reportedly removed his shoes and cap—symbols of his knighthood—while declaring his intention to renounce Christianity.

“This is my last day as a Christian. I’m done. This is awful,” he said.

Continue, the Knight said: “How could anyone believe that this cathedral, which Ifeanyi Ubah laboured to build, could be inaugurated without any mention of his name? This is bad. I’m done with Christianity. This is my last day as a Christian,” he added.

The video has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged failure of the Catholic Church to acknowledge the late senator’s role in the cathedral’s construction.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nnewi Catholic Diocese had yet to issue an official response or clarification regarding the allegations.
