In an exclusive interview with Punch Online, Chinonso Mmadubugwu recounted how his 35-year-old younger sister, Ogechukwu, was allegedly murdered by her fiancé. He said the family is seeking justice and calling on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Excerpts:
Q: Can you tell us who Ogechukwu was to you?
A: Ogechukwu was my younger sister.
Q: How old was she?
A: She was 35 years old.
Q: When was the last time you saw her?
A: I haven’t been in the South-East for a while, but I believe the last time I saw her was in November 2025. We spoke often and even talked just two days before the incident. It was a normal brother-and-sister conversation.
Q: Was she based in Anambra State?
A: Yes, she was based in Anambra, while I live in Lagos.
Q: Were you aware she had a 26-year-old fiancé?
A: That was what someone who questioned the suspect said. However, my sister told us the man was three years older than her. There’s a possibility he did not give his correct details.
Q: Were you aware they were in a relationship?
A: Yes, I knew she was in a relationship, but I hadn’t met him because I don’t live in the South-East. My younger sister knew him, and my mother also knew him because he visited occasionally.
Q: Did she inform anyone before she went out that night?
A: Yes, she informed my mum. On December 8, he visited our house around 8 p.m., claiming he had a fever. He later left but called again around 10 p.m., saying he was shivering and asked my sister to come over to help him.
She told my mum she was going to the pharmacy to get drugs for him. Around 11 p.m., my mum called her, and she said the sicknes ins was serious and that she would stay over to care for him and take him to the hospital in the morning.
Q: What happened after she could no longer be reached?
A: The next morning, my mum called her phone repeatedly, but she didn’t answer. The man’s phone also wasn’t reachable. The nurse he was supposed to visit said she hadn’t seen him. My mum became worried.
She went to his house, but it was locked. After contacting the police and returning to the house, they applied slight pressure to the door and it opened. Inside, they found my sister lying dead on the bed. The suspect was nowhere to be found.
Her phone and one of his phones were in the room. A handwritten note was also found.
Q: What was written in the note?
A: It was written in Pidgin, suggesting that unknown persons killed her and kidnapped him. We believe it was meant to mislead investigators.
Q: What did the family do next?
A: They immediately contacted the police, who came to the scene. She was taken to the general hospital, where she was confirmed dead, and her body was deposited in the mortuary.
Q: When did the incident occur?
A: She went there on the night of Monday, December 8, 2025. We discovered what had happened on Tuesday, December 9.
Q: Was the suspect arrested?
A: Yes. He fled but was arrested in Ughelli, Delta State, and transferred back to Anambra State, where he is currently being held by the State CID.
Q: Has he confessed?
A: Yes, he confessed to killing my sister. However, we do not yet know the motive.
Q: Is the family considering an autopsy?
A: A post-mortem has been conducted. The
physical injuries were documented, and samples were sent to Lagos for laboratory analysis. We are awaiting the results.
Q: How are you personally coping with this loss?
A: It’s painful because we were close. She went there out of love and compassion. It’s tragic that the person she trusted is the one who killed her. This incident has shattered trust for me completely.
Q: Were there any prior concerns about their relationship?
A: None. He was already accepted by the family and had even formally engaged her. They were planning their traditional wedding, and items for it were already in our house.
Q: Are you satisfied with the police investigation so far?
A: I would say about 60 per cent. I don’t understand why he hasn’t been charged to court yet.
Q: What kind of justice are you seeking?
A: I want the law to take its course. If he acted alone or not, he should tell the truth. Nothing can bring my sister back, but justice must be served.
Q: Has she been buried?
A: Yes, she was buried on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
Q: Did she leave behind a child?
A: Yes, she has a four-year-old daughter. The suspect is not the father.
Q: How is the family coping?
A: It hasn’t been easy, but God is helping us. My mother is strong, though she still has moments of shock.
