Few hours ago, some operatives, said to be officers of the Nigeria Police Force, from Abuja, stormed the State Secretariat, along Portharcourt road Owerri Imo- State and whisked away a Director of Accounts and a Permanent Secretary at the Block 5 of the State Secretariat, shooting sporadically.
At the time of making this report, the offices and names of the Civil Servants affected respectively have not been confirmed as the block, accomodates, the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) and the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs(BLCA).
Eyewitnesses account, have it that, there were intermittent shootings that led to everyone, both visitors and civil servants running for cover to avoid being kidnapped or being hit by a stray bullet.
Many wondered, why the police would come to arrest alleged suspects in a commando like style, even as others thought, they may be Kidnappers disguising as police Officers Since they were on Police Jackets. Confusion trailed their operations as people wondered why they would be shooting unnecessarily, when they could have easily taken away the suspects without causing pandemonium.
Fear also gripped many as it was thought, “Unknown Gunmen” may have attacked the secretariat.
Recall that, Gunmen attacked the Nigeria Correctional Center, Owerri and the Imo State Police Command last Easter Monday. Without proper investigation thereafter, the immediate past Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, accused the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the attack.
He was removed last Wednesday, even while he was still on a working visit to Owerri Imo- State.
ECHO NEWS’ efforts to confirm the incident from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Imo State Police Command, SP.Orlando Ikeokwu, were futile as his phone rang severally without response.
