Abia State Confirms First Case of Monkeypox

The Abia State Government has confirmed its first case of monkeypox, according to an announcement made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday, August 19.

Out of 13 suspected cases, one has been confirmed positive, nine have tested negative, and three are still awaiting confirmation. Fortunately, no deaths have been recorded so far.

The confirmed case was reported in the Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area. In response to the outbreak, the state government has established centers for treatment and management, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba. Additional centers are expected to be announced soon.

The government’s prompt response aims to contain the spread of the disease and ensure the well-being of citizens.
