‘Polygamy Ended My Brother’s Life’ — Cross River Lady Cries Out After Alleged Killing by Stepbrothers

A woman mourning her brother’s alleged killing has recalled an earlier attack she says she survived, blaming a history of family violence on polygamy.

A woman, Shantel Eno Oka, has called for justice following the alleged killing of her brother, Bassey Eno Ibiang, by their two stepbrothers in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Shantel, who blamed polygamy for the tragedy, also recalled an alleged attack by her stepsisters in 2010, describing the latest incident as a painful reminder of her family’s troubled history.

Famous Reporters learnt that the police arrested two suspects, identified as Omini Eno Ibiang, 28, and Emmanuel Eno Ibiang, 26, in connection with the alleged murder.

The incident was reported to the police on October 25, 2026, following allegations that the suspects attacked Bassey over an accusation that he stole a bag belonging to their elder sister.

According to the complainants, the deceased was allegedly tied up and severely assaulted with a sharp object.

He was subsequently rushed to Ugep General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His body was later deposited in the hospital mortuary.

Sister Demands Justice, Blames Polygamy

Reacting to the incident in a series of Facebook posts, Shantel shared photographs of her late brother and the two suspects, demanding justice over his death.

She alleged that the killing followed an accusation made against her brother without evidence and questioned whether her step-siblings had ever regarded them as members of the same family.

In one of her posts, she wrote: “WHY WE FIGHT AGAINST POLYGAMY. It just ended my bro life.”

Shantel further alleged that the two men beat her elder brother to death in his room after accusing him of stealing their elder sister’s bag.

She expressed anguish that nobody was present to intervene during the alleged attack because her brother was alone in his room.

Recalls Alleged Attack by Stepsisters in 2010

The grieving woman also recounted an incident she said occurred on January 3, 2010, when her three stepsisters allegedly attacked her with hot water.

According to her, she escaped serious harm because she was not inside the house when the incident happened. She claimed that the attackers met her outside, where other people intervened.

Describing the two incidents as a disturbing pattern, Shantel wrote that the latest tragedy had brought back painful memories of the earlier alleged attack.

She also accused one of her stepsisters, identified in her post as Grace Emmanuel, of making the allegation that reportedly preceded her brother’s death.

Questioning the relationship between the siblings, she asked whether they had ever truly been regarded as one family and whether her stepbrothers could have treated their biological siblings in the same manner.

Police Arrest Suspects

The two suspects were reportedly arrested in connection with Bassey’s death, while the circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to police investigation.

Shantel’s account has drawn attention to the family’s history of alleged violence and her call for justice for her late brother.

However, the allegations against the suspects and the account of the events leading to Bassey’s death have yet to be independently established in court.

Below are some of her emotional posts:
