Benue Woman Allegedly Beats Niece to Death Over N500, Grandma’s Reaction Sparks Outrage

A N500 dispute has ended in tragedy in Benue State, where a young girl reportedly died following an alleged brutal beating by her aunt.

A woman in Jato-Aka, Benue State, has reportedly been arrested after allegedly beating her young niece to death over a missing N500. The child’s brother reportedly survived with a fractured hand.

A woman has reportedly been arrested by the police in Benue State over the alleged killing of her young niece following an accusation that the child and her sibling stole N500.

The disturbing incident allegedly occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area of the state.

According to a Facebook post by John Tyokoso, the woman allegedly accused her brother’s children of stealing the money before subjecting them to severe physical punishment.

Tyokoso alleged that the woman tied up the female child, exposed her to the scorching sun and repeatedly beat her while applying pepper to sensitive parts of her body, including her eyes, armpits, anus and vagina.

The child reportedly died following the alleged abuse, while her brother survived but sustained a fractured hand.

Woman Allegedly Hid Child’s Body After Her Death

The Facebook user further alleged that the woman moved the girl’s body into a room and locked the door after discovering that the child had died.

When neighbours reportedly confronted her over the incident, she allegedly denied responsibility and claimed that a rope found at the scene belonged to a goat that had broken loose.

However, the neighbours reportedly insisted on investigating the matter and forced the door open, where they allegedly discovered the girl’s lifeless body on the floor.

Grandmother’s Alleged Reaction Raises Concern

Tyokoso’s account also claimed that the children’s grandmother was present during the incident but failed to intervene to protect them from the alleged abuse.

Instead, she reportedly defended her daughter and questioned witnesses about whether it was the first time someone had beaten a child to death.

The allegation has added to the outrage surrounding the incident, particularly over the reported failure to protect the children from the violence.

Police Arrest Suspect

The Facebook post credited the swift intervention of police officers in Jato-Aka with the arrest of the woman.

However, further details about the suspect’s identity, the children’s ages, the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse and the status of the police investigation were not provided in the account.

The allegations have raised serious concerns about child protection and the dangers of extreme corporal punishment.

A dispute involving N500 should never result in violence against a child. The circumstances surrounding the girl’s death require a thorough investigation, while the surviving child needs appropriate medical attention and protection.
