2027: Igboayaka Unveils Social Contract for Orlu, Orsu, Oru-East Constituency

For many Nigerians, political promises often end with elections. But for Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, representation should begin where the campaign ends — with accountability, service and measurable results for the people.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate for Orlu/Orsu/Oru-East Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election has outlined a vision of leadership built around what he describes as a “social contract” between elected representatives and the people they serve.

According to Igboayaka, social welfare should not be reduced to occasional handouts or political gestures. Rather, it should form part of the responsibility of responsive, responsible and accountable leadership.

‘Leadership Is a Responsibility, Not a Favour’

For Igboayaka, the social contract represents an agreement between the people and those entrusted with public office.

He argues that a political mandate is an obligation, not a favour.

A leader who receives the mandate of the people, he says, must understand that every promise made carries a responsibility. Therefore, delivering on such promises should not be presented as a personal favour to citizens.

Instead, it should be recognised as part of the duty attached to public office.

This, he maintains, is why integrity remains important in public leadership.

Leaders must be willing to honour the commitments they make to the people, even after the excitement of an election has faded.

Social Welfare Beyond Handouts

Igboayaka’s proposed approach places emphasis on creating opportunities that can make citizens more secure, productive and economically independent.

The focus, he says, should include:

• Youth empowerment
• Education and educational support
• Skills development
• Entrepreneurship
• Accessible healthcare
• Women’s economic participation
• Community development
• Social protection for vulnerable citizens
• Functional infrastructure and public services

The central question, therefore, should not only be, “What can government give the people?”

It should also be, “What can government do to create an environment where our people can build sustainable livelihoods for themselves?”

For Igboayaka, this distinction is important because sustainable development goes beyond temporary relief.

Young people need opportunities to build their future.

Women need greater access to economic opportunities.

Students need meaningful educational support.

Artisans need skills, tools and opportunities to grow.

Vulnerable citizens need social protection.

Communities, meanwhile, need functional infrastructure and reliable public services.

Representation Must Be Accountable

Igboayaka also argues that citizens have the right to demand clear answers from candidates seeking public office.

Among the questions voters should ask are:

What are you proposing?

What legislation will you pursue?

How will your promises be implemented?

Who will benefit from your programmes?

How will progress be measured?

These questions, he says, should not be viewed as hostile.

Rather, they are legitimate questions of democratic accountability.

For the people of Orlu, Orsu and Oru-East Federal Constituency, the 2027 political conversation, according to the YPP candidate, should therefore focus on ideas, programmes, legislative responsibility, integrity and measurable results.

Beyond Occupying a Seat

The National Assembly is not simply a place to occupy a political seat.

It is an institution responsible for law-making, representation and oversight.

Consequently, Igboayaka says anyone seeking to represent the people must understand the responsibilities that come with the mandate.

His message is built around a simple principle:

Leadership is responsibility.

Leadership is service.

Leadership is accountability.

He maintains that the social contract between elected representatives and the people must never be treated as a favour.

As the 2027 general election approaches, Igboayaka’s campaign is positioning this social contract as part of its proposed approach to representation in Orlu/Orsu/Oru-East Federal Constituency.
