A visit to beg for food has allegedly ended in a disturbing child sexual abuse case in Umuahia, Abia State, after a 9-year-old girl was allegedly defiled by a man she had approached for help.
The man, identified as Ikechukwu Emmanuel, from Amaegbuato, Nkpa, in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, was reportedly arrested over the alleged incident.
According to Ochiegbu Marvellous of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, Abia State Chapter, the incident occurred in Umuana Ndume, Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Ochiegbu alleged that Emmanuel admitted to him that he defiled the girl on August 16, 2026.
He further alleged that youths in Umuana Ndume caught the suspect on August 18, 2026, after the incident was reported.
According to Ochiegbu, the suspect allegedly refused to open his door when the youths arrived.
He was also accused of throwing the girl out through a window.
However, what the human rights advocate said was particularly disturbing was the alleged reason the child had visited the man.
Ochiegbu said the suspect claimed that the girl often came to him because she was hungry and that he would give her food.
He said the development had continued to trouble him, particularly because the child had reportedly approached the man for help.
The human rights advocate commended the Abia State Police Command for what he described as its prompt intervention in the case.
He also called for stronger action against child sexual violence and urged members of the public to protect vulnerable children from abuse.
The allegations are subject to investigation, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
