GOMEP-NG Urges FG to Empower Women, Expand Funding and Economic Opportunities

Millions of Nigerian women are still struggling to access finance, business support and leadership opportunities, prompting the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) to call for stronger government action to empower women, especially those at the grassroots.

GOMEP-NG has urged the Federal Government to expand funding and economic opportunities for Nigerian women, especially those in low-income and underserved communities. The group said better access to finance, education, business support and leadership opportunities would help women contribute more to Nigeria’s economic growth and national development.

ABUJA — The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has called on the Federal Government to expand economic opportunities for women and strengthen funding programmes aimed at reducing the gender gap in business, goyvernance and national development.

The media organisation made the call while stressing the need for greater attention to women at the grassroots and within low-income communities.

According to GOMEP-NG, women should have equal access to finance, education, enterprise support, employment and public opportunities.

It said such access would enable more women to build businesses, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic growth.

The organisation also urged women across the country to take a more active role in business and entrepreneurship.

GOMEP-NG encouraged women with viable business ideas to prepare and submit proposals to government ministries, departments and agencies.

It said such proposals could open the door to funding, partnerships, training and other forms of institutional support.

The group further called for deliberate policies to remove the structural and cultural barriers that continue to limit women’s participation in the economy and governance.

GOMEP-NG noted that although women have traditionally carried major responsibilities within the family, social expectations should not prevent those who are willing and capable from pursuing economic opportunities.

It stressed that women should be given the freedom and support to establish businesses, secure employment and participate in decision-making.

According to the organisation, creating such opportunities would not only promote gender equality but would also strengthen Nigeria’s wider economy.

GOMEP-NG Calls for Greater Support for Women

The media body also called on men to support women’s advancement by creating opportunities for them to participate and lead in areas where they have the competence, skills and ambition.

It urged policymakers to introduce and expand funding programmes specifically designed for women-owned businesses.

The programmes, it said, should particularly target women in low-income and underserved communities who often face greater barriers when seeking access to finance.

GOMEP-NG maintained that targeted funding and business support could help bridge existing inequalities while unlocking the productive potential of millions of Nigerian women.

“Women are not merely beneficiaries of development; they are active contributors to the growth and prosperity of the nation,” the organisation said.

It therefore called for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to create sustainable opportunities for women.

The group also appealed for policies that would guarantee women equitable access to economic opportunities.

It described gender equality as an important part of inclusive national development, stressing that Nigeria’s economic ambitions would be better achieved when women are given the resources and institutional support needed to participate fully in economic and political life.

GOMEP-NG consequently called for a broader national commitment to reducing the barriers confronting women.

The organisation said empowering women, particularly those at the grassroots, would have a multiplier effect on families, communities and the Nigerian economy.
