Aba Blackout Worsens: FENRAD Demands Urgent Action as Businesses Suffer

Thousands of households and businesses across Aba, the business ban of Abia State, have been thrown into darkness following a major disruption in gas supply to the Geometric Power Plant. As economic activities grind to a halt, civil society group FENRAD is demanding urgent intervention, warning that the prolonged blackout is exposing serious weaknesses in the Aba Ring-Fence electricity system.

Aba and nine local government areas under the Aba Ring-Fence lost electricity after a disruption in natural gas supply reduced operations at the 188MW Geometric Power Plant in Osisioma. FENRAD has called for the immediate restoration of power and urged regulators to review the electricity market to improve competition, strengthen infrastructure, and prevent future blackouts.

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has expressed deep concern over the prolonged electricity outage that has plunged the Aba Ring-Fence Area into darkness following a disruption in natural gas supply to the 188-megawatt (MW) Geometric Power Plant located in Osisioma Industrial Layout, Abia State.

This is contained in a release signed by Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the Executive Director , Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), and issued to Famousreporters.com, today, August 1.

According to the organisation, the blackout, which began at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, has left the nine local government areas served under the Aba Ring-Fence without electricity. The outage has disrupted commercial activities, healthcare services, educational institutions, manufacturing operations, and the livelihoods of thousands of residents and businesses that rely on stable electricity.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, FENRAD said it was “deeply concerned” that the disruption continues to inflict significant economic and social hardship across the commercial hub.

The organisation noted that public statements issued by Aba Power attributed the outage to a significant drop in gas pressure caused by technical challenges affecting its gas supplier.

Although reports indicate the interruption resulted from operational constraints within the gas supply infrastructure, FENRAD stressed that the consequences are being borne by residents, industries, healthcare facilities, schools, and businesses across the Aba Ring-Fence.

While acknowledging the strategic importance of the Geometric Power Project in improving electricity supply within Aba, FENRAD commended the efforts made over the years to enhance power reliability in the commercial city. However, it warned that the latest outage has once again exposed the vulnerability of a power system that depends largely on a single generation source and a single distribution structure without sufficient redundancy or competitive alternatives.

The organisation further stated that the economic implications of the blackout are enormous.

“Aba remains one of Nigeria’s foremost manufacturing and commercial centres, with thousands of small and medium-scale enterprises relying on uninterrupted electricity for production and service delivery,” the statement read.

“Every hour of blackout translates into lost productivity, increased operating costs through dependence on diesel and petrol generators, reduced incomes, and avoidable hardship for households and businesses already grappling with prevailing economic challenges.”

Consequently, FENRAD called on Heirs Energies, Aba Power, Geometric Power Limited, Nigerian Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency (ASERA) and other relevant regulatory authorities to urgently collaborate and deploy every available technical and operational resource to restore gas supply and electricity without further delay.

The organisation also demanded greater transparency from stakeholders, urging them to provide regular updates on the nature of the disruption, remedial measures being implemented, and a realistic timeline for restoring electricity.

Beyond the immediate crisis, FENRAD argued that the incident has exposed deeper structural weaknesses within the Aba Ring-Fence electricity market.

According to the group, the current monopolistic arrangement limits consumer choice and concentrates operational risks within a single network, leaving millions of electricity consumers without viable alternatives whenever major technical failures occur.

FENRAD therefore urged the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency (ASERA) to fully exercise its regulatory responsibilities by ensuring strict compliance with electricity market regulations, protecting consumers, strengthening oversight of licensed operators, and promoting greater transparency and accountability in electricity service delivery across the state.

Furthermore, the organisation called on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), ASERA, the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Abia State Government to undertake a comprehensive review of the Aba Ring-Fence electricity framework.

It said such a review should promote greater competition, infrastructure redundancy, improved consumer protection, increased private sector investment, and a more resilient electricity market capable of withstanding future disruptions.

FENRAD maintained that dismantling monopolistic tendencies within the Aba Ring-Fence would improve efficiency, expand consumer choice, strengthen market resilience, and significantly reduce the risks associated with dependence on a single electricity provider.

In addition, the organisation urged stakeholders to accelerate investments in gas infrastructure, diversify fuel supply arrangements, strengthen transmission resilience, and establish effective contingency mechanisms to minimise future disruptions.

“The recurring dependence on a single gas supply chain and limited operational alternatives poses significant risks to energy security and economic stability within the Aba Ring-Fence,” the statement added.

FENRAD emphasised that reliable electricity is not merely an economic necessity but a critical driver of sustainable development, industrial growth, healthcare delivery, education, environmental protection, and overall social wellbeing.

The organisation stressed that residents and businesses should not continue to bear the burden of institutional and infrastructure shortcomings that can be addressed through sound planning, effective regulation, coordinated investment, and a competitive electricity market.

It reaffirmed its solidarity with the people and businesses of Aba during the ongoing blackout and urged all responsible institutions to act with urgency, transparency, and accountability to restore electricity while pursuing long-term reforms capable of delivering a resilient, competitive, reliable, and consumer-focused power sector in Abia State.
