Panic erupted in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, after a three-storey building used as a student hostel collapsed in the early hours of Monday, leaving an unknown number of occupants trapped beneath the debris.

The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, is located beside Tonimas Filling Station in Amokpala, Oko, a community that hosts several tertiary institution students.

Although the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed, eyewitnesses said the building came crashing down while students were inside, triggering desperate cries for help from beneath the rubble.

One eyewitness, identified simply as Ifeoma, recalled the terrifying moment.

“We heard a very loud noise before the building collapsed. The sound attracted many residents and students, who rushed to the scene to find out what had happened.

“Within moments after the loud noise, occupants inside the building started shouting for help as the structure came down.”

Meanwhile, videos and photographs circulating on social media showed a massive crowd gathered around the collapsed building as emergency responders, security personnel and volunteers searched tirelessly through the debris for survivors.

Rescue operations were immediately launched by officials of the Anambra State Fire Service, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (ANSEMA), the Nigeria Police Force and other emergency agencies.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said rescue efforts were ongoing while authorities worked to account for everyone trapped in the collapsed building.
According to him:

“The Anambra State Police-led Joint Security Team assures the public that rescue operations are ongoing following the late-night incident on Sunday involving the collapse of a three-storey building known as Elite Five Star Lodge, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, Amokpala, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

“The incident resulted in some occupants being trapped beneath the rubble. Upon receiving the distress report, the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, immediately mobilised the scene, secured the area to prevent further danger and coordinated rescue efforts.

“The Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency also responded promptly and joined the rescue operation.”

Ikenga disclosed that several injured victims had already been rescued and taken to a hospital in Oko, where they are receiving treatment.

However, he noted that rescue teams were still searching for other occupants believed to be trapped beneath the debris, adding that the total number of casualties could not yet be confirmed.

He urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and stay away from the disaster scene to allow emergency workers unrestricted access.

“Further updates will be communicated as more verified information becomes available,” he added.

Authorities have assured the public that rescue operations will continue until every trapped victim is accounted for.
