Release Nnamdi Kanu to Restore Peace in S-East, Ned Nwoko urges Tinubu
Senator Ned Nwoko urges President Tinubu to release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, describing his detention as unjust. Nwoko says Kanu’s freedom and a new South-East state will restore peace and fairness.
According to a report by Punch on Sunday, October 26, 2025, Senator Ned Nwoko has called for the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that his continued detention is “unjust” and contributes to the rising unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial District made the appeal during an interview on Channels Television, emphasizing that peace and stability would return to the region if “fairness and equity” guided government policies.
“Nnamdi Kanu has been in custody for some time now. I believe he has been held unjustly,” Senator Nwoko stated.
He explained that the creation of an additional state in the South-East, along with Kanu’s release, would go a long way in easing regional tensions and addressing the long-standing feeling of marginalisation among the Igbo people.
Senator Nwoko also pointed out that the South-East remains the only geopolitical zone in Nigeria with just five states, describing this imbalance as “deliberate and unjust.”
The senator revealed that he had previously discussed the issue with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the federal government to demonstrate fairness and inclusion as a means to reduce insecurity in the region.
His remarks come shortly after the National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review approved the creation of an additional state for the South-East — a move Nwoko welcomed as “a step in the right direction toward justice, equity, and lasting stability.”
