Why Coal City University organised employability workshop for final year students

A workshop solitarily driven to enhance employability skills and stir restless entrepreneurial spirit among the final year students have been held in the main auditorium of the university, Enugu state recently.

Themed Enhancing Global Employability and Career Success,  the event which had in attendance key actors in the vocational education, development pundits and scholars of immense erudition hallmarked the conclusion of the academic engagements of the final year students of the varsity and placed them on the same pedestal with their global counterparts.

Speaking during workshop, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Afam Icha Ituma said because of absence of job in the labour market, there is urgent need to evolve approaches that will enhance students capacity while making them competitive and relevant before the employer.

Prof Ituma further explained “the workshop was to equip the final year students with the latest employability skills needed to give them a competitive advantage in today’s demanding and dynamic global job market”.

Earlier, the Chairman, Coal City University Strategic Advisory Board  Prof. Chidiebere Onyia urged the final year students of the University to “be purposeful, principled and purpose driven calling urging them “plan to avoid regrets”.

On her part, Mrs Iphie Ugonabo revealed her determined interest to raise graduates with prerequisite skills and competencies to combat the horrific unemployment siege bedeviling our society.

Speaking to our correspondent in Enugu after the virtual workshop, a final year, Ephraim Okoye who was visibly elated expressed unalloyed gratitude to Professor Afam Icha Ituma, whom he described as academic bulldozer.

Also, Gloria Chukwuma, lauded the Vice Chancellor Professor Afam Icha for such wonderful innovation saying she is able to strike a balance between theory and practice, a feat made possible by the virtual workshop.
Miss Chukwuma commended the intellectual sophistry of the British trained academic, Ituma, calling for other universities to borrow a leaf from Coal City to enhance the entrepreneurial spirit of students.

Meanwhile, the university has, amidst the pandemic, commenced the second semester examination.

Asked how the university has scaled the hurdles of the Covid-19 protocols, Professor Ituma explained that the university is fully equipped with ICT facilities which made it possible not to halt academic activities.

It would be recalled that Coal City University Enugu at the peak of the pandemic held the 5th matriculation ceremony virtually, feat never known in the nation’s academic history.
