- On day 1 of South Africa’s nationwide Covid-19 lockdown on 27 March, News24 documented the ghostly streets in and around the Cape Town central business district.
- When we returned to those same streets on day 1 of lockdown under Level 3, we saw a city slowly returning to life.
- South Africans have endured a total of 68 days of lockdown.
As the first day of the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus kicked off on Friday 27 March, News24 was on the ground in Cape Town’s central business district where the normally jam-packed streets went from bustling, to hauntingly empty.
On Monday 1 June, the first day of lockdown Level 3, we visited those same streets in the CBD, to capture this telling visual comparison.
While things aren’t quite back to normal yet, the Mother City was far from sleepy, as several pedestrians and motorists headed back to work.
