Two Killed, One Injured, as Rival Cult Groups Clash in Rivers’ Andoni
“Two people have been killed and one injured following a deadly clash between rival cult groups in Ngo and Unyengala communities, Andoni LGA of Rivers State, as police launch an investigation and restore calm.”
No fewer than two persons were shot dead on Monday following a violent clash between rival gangs in Ngo and Unyengala communities, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Sources disclosed that the confrontation involved suspected members of the militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), and the Iceland cult group.
Famousreoirters.com reports, with reference to The Punch online, that the violence, which reportedly began on Sunday, escalated into Monday, stemming from what residents described as a battle for supremacy and territorial control.
“It started on Sunday evening when I heard gunshots in Ngo and Unyengala, and people were running for safety,” a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident, said.
“They said it was Iceland and MEND. Many of us fled the area, and it was later that we learnt that two people had been shot dead,” the source added.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, told our correspondent on Monday afternoon that investigations were ongoing.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. Two persons were killed, while another sustained critical injuries,” Iringe-Koko said.
She explained that the violence was linked to a supremacy battle between two rival cult groups in the area.
“Security has been beefed up, calm has returned to the communities, and investigation is ongoing to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and apprehended,” the police spokesperson stated.
