Soludo Reopens Nkwo Nnewi Market After Sit-at-Home Crackdown
“Business activities roared back to life on Monday at the bustling Nkwo Nnewi Market as the Chukwuma Soludo administration lifted a one-week shutdown imposed over non-compliance with the state’s directive abolishing the controversial Monday sit-at-home. The reopening signals a renewed push by the Anambra State Government to restore economic normalcy and assert authority in areas previously affected by separatist disruptions.”
The Anambra State Government has officially reopened the New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market, popularly known as Nkwo Nnewi, after a one-week closure triggered by traders’ alleged failure to comply with the directive suspending Monday sit-at-home activities.
The market was sealed last Monday on the orders of Governor Soludo, conveyed through his Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Evaristus Uba, following an inspection that revealed what officials described as a “low turnout of traders.”
Government authorities interpreted the development as resistance to the administration’s standing order abolishing the Monday sit-at-home, a practice linked to pro-Biafra agitation in parts of the South-East.
Speaking during the enforcement visit last week, Uba warned that the shutdown could be extended if traders failed to resume full commercial operations the following Monday.
However, the ban was lifted after the Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Echezona Anazodo, conducted a follow-up inspection and observed a significantly improved turnout.
Anazodo told traders:
“I’m happy to know today that traders complied with the order to resume business. I want to believe that if there was even half of this turnout last week, the market would not have been shut down.”
He added a stern warning:
“Now that most of you have complied, we will go round the market and seal the shops of traders who failed to open. We don’t want a situation where the entire market would be shut down just because of a few traders. Those traders should bear the brunt themselves.”
Fresh Shutdown Reported in Ihiala
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that a market in Ihiala Local Government Area has also been sealed for one week over alleged non-compliance with the anti-sit-at-home directive.
Sources disclosed that government officials reportedly arrived at the facility only to find it under lock and key, prompting immediate enforcement action.
Ihiala has historically been considered one of the flashpoints during the peak of separatist agitation in the region. At the height of the unrest, criminal elements allegedly established camps in parts of the area, creating security concerns that significantly disrupted commercial activities.
Government’s Broader Strategy
The reopening of Nkwo Nnewi underscores the Soludo administration’s continued determination to dismantle the culture of enforced sit-at-home orders and revive economic productivity across Anambra State.
Officials insist that while compliance will be rewarded, defiance will attract targeted sanctions rather than collective punishment going forward.
