Senate Moves on Anioma State — What Akpabio Just Revealed Could Change Delta Forever
Nigeria’s political landscape may be on the verge of a historic transformation as the Senate throws its weight behind the long-debated creation of Anioma State. In a bold and emphatic declaration, Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured supporters that the dream of Anioma is no longer a distant hope but an imminent reality—signaling a major shift that could redefine power, development, and representation in the South-South region.
The Nigerian Senate has pledged strong support for the creation of Anioma State, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirming that the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, has widespread legislative backing and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration agenda for regional development and equity.
The Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to the proposed creation of Anioma State, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio pledging both legislative and political backing for the initiative.
Akpabio made this known on Wednesday while addressing party faithful at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, Delta State.
He emphasized that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully aligned with the proposal, underscoring its importance within the broader national development framework.
According to the Senate President, Warri is positioned to serve as the capital of the remaining Delta State, citing its strategic advantages, including an airport, seaport, government institutions, oil company presence, and a standard stadium.
The high-profile congress drew governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, alongside key political stakeholders across the South-South.
Describing the agitation for Anioma State as “historically justified,” Akpabio noted that the demand reflects longstanding calls for equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced regional development.
He further highlighted that the initiative championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North—has gained sustained legislative traction and remains a priority for the 10th Senate.
“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio stated.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities. With Asaba as Anioma State capital, Warri will serve as the capital of the new Delta.”
Akpabio also called for unity across the South-South region, urging stakeholders to rally behind the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which he said is critical for sustainable growth and national cohesion.
Earlier, in November 2025, Senator Nwoko disclosed that the Anioma State proposal had gained significant momentum, revealing that constitutional amendment committees and the Tinubu administration had endorsed the move.
He added that no fewer than 97 senators had signed in support of the proposal—describing the level of legislative backing as unprecedented.
