Pregnant Widow Banished from Benue Community Over Alleged Shoplifting
A heavily pregnant widow has reportedly been banished from the Ugbema community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State after she was accused of stealing items from local shops.
Sources said community elders ordered her expulsion following allegations that she had been taking small household goods to feed herself, her young child, and her unborn baby after the recent death of her husband.

Eyewitnesses recounted that her ordeal began on Saturday, October 10, 2025, when some local youths caught her in the act. The woman was said to have been paraded and punished publicly under the scorching sun before being driven out of the community.
Community sources further revealed that the youths carried out the banishment on the instruction of village elders, who viewed the act as a necessary disciplinary measure.
However, several residents have since condemned the action, describing it as inhumane and insensitive. They argued that rather than humiliation, the widow deserves compassion and support, especially given her vulnerable condition.
