Police arrest man roaming streets with knife, threatening Umuahia residents
The Abia State Police Command says it has arrested the machete-wielding man threatening residents in Umuahia.
It was gathered that the suspect was roaming along major roads with a machete and chasing passersby, forcing many to scamper to safety.
The arrest followed a public outcry after a video of the man’s aggressive behaviour went viral.
The spokesperson of the command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, who confirmed the arrest on Monday, August 4, said the man is suspected to be of unsound mind.
“The Abia State Police Command was alerted about a young man, suspected to be of unsound mind, seen roaming the streets in Umuahia with a machete. The DPO Central Police Station Umuahia was alerted and has confirmed that the individual was apprehended and disarmed,” she stated.
Earlier, residents of Abia State are calling on security agencies to act fast after a disturbing video surfaced showing a man roaming the streets with a machete and threatening passersby.
The footage, recorded by a concerned resident, captured the unidentified man moving around with the weapon in broad daylight. According to the eyewitness, the man became aggressive when he realised he was being followed, issuing more threats and warning them to stay away.
Worried about the possibility of the situation degenerating to more life-threatening, the residents were propelled to call on the Nigerian Police Force, and other security Operatives in the state to intervene immediately and apprehend the suspect before anyone gets hurt.
