“I received a letter from the NYSC Director now, indicating that the family wants the matter to go forward,” were the words of Governor Chukwuma Soludo

Sequel to the assault case involving a corps member in Anambra State, Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, says a formal report has been sent to him from the National Youth Service Corps.

The Governor pointed out that the communication did not only summarize the incident but also reflected the position of the victim’s family.

Soludo stated during an interview on Arise News, that the letter which was issued by the NYSC State Director though it reached his office on Wednesday was dated Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Speaking, he said:
“I just received a letter today dated yesterday from the NYSC Director in the State giving me asummary of what had happened and so on and so forth, now indicating that the family wants the matter to go forward and that’s welcomed,” the governor said.

It will be recalled that some security Operatives in Anambra, Agunechemba Security Outfit were captured in a viral video, assaulting Abiola, a member of the NYSC, an incident which has sparked outrage among civil rights advocates and youth groups.

This is even as many have demanded justice and called for more strict safeguards for corps members serving in the state.

Soludo who applauded Agunechemba security outfit for their relentless commitment towards fighting criminality in difficult terrains, insisted that misconduct cannot be overlooked.

He stressed that his administration will not hesitate to call out excesses even as it supports the group’s overall security role.

He further assured that corps members
remain a vital part of community
development and that their safety would not be compromised. “We value the contributions of NYSC in community development. What happened is unfortunate, and the processes to get justice are already underway,” Soludo emphasized.

The governor added that the state government will work closely with the NYSC and Abiola’s family to ensure that due process is followed and accountability is achieved.

FEMALE NYSC MEMBER RECOUNTS ASSAULT BY ANAMBRA STATE SECURITY OPERATIVES

Earlier, Jennifer Elohor the assaulted female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, had recounted her sordid experience and demanded justice after a viral video implicated members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group.

In a report, Elohor narrated a distressful ordeal at her lodge, where vigilante operatives allegedly attacked her and her colleagues.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on July 23, 2025, Elohor stated that the men, who she later identified as members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group (also known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi), kicked down their door.

“At first, I thought it was an armed robber until he ordered all of us to come outside,” she recounted. Despite her and her colleagues presenting their NYSC identity cards and uniforms, the men allegedly accused them of being internet fraudsters.

The victim claimed she was pushed down the stairs, beaten, and had her clothes torn by the operatives who kept asking what gave her the right, as a woman, to challenge them.

“They pushed us downstairs, almost shoving me down the staircase. They kept asking what gave me the right, as a woman, to challenge them. It was when we got outside that we saw their vehicle and discovered they were from the Anambra Vigilante Group”.

“They beat me, tore my clothes, and even hit one of my colleagues with an iron rod for pleading on my behalf. They forced me into their vehicle, pressing my neck, slapping me, and threatening to smash our phones if we contacted anyone,” she said.

ANAMBRA STATE POLICE COMMAND CONDEMNS VIOLENT ASSAULT ON CORPER

The Anambra State Police Command has since condemned the violent assault and confirmed the arrest and detention of the vigilantes involved.

The operatives were reportedly paraded for their actions. Rights groups and Nigerians online have since demanded an urgent investigation, justice for the victims, and a stronger legal framework to regulate the conduct of local security groups.

According to a Facebook post by Maria Ude Nwachi, the family of a female corps member assaulted in Anambra State has reportedly asked that the matter not be taken to the police or court, citing the sensitive nature of the viral video.

Speaking on the issue, an official of the Agunechemba security outfit said:

“We have opened statements from the suspects and the corners, and our next step is to hand them over to the police. However, the Corper and somebody who called and said he was the parents pleaded with us, for the sensitive nature of that video, that they wouldn’t want us to hand them over to the police for prosecution.

In their own words, it will go a long way against the lady in question because there’s no way we would go to court without the evidence, and they wouldn’t want the video trending. In fact, they even went ahead pleading to anyone who has the video to delete it.”

The official further explained that following the family’s appeal, the suspects were made to compensate for damages.

“Coming from them, we agreed to do that. There and then, they listed out some of the things that were d♤maged including laptops, phones, and other things, and we paid,” he added.

However, on the status of the suspects, the security group insisted they have been suspended since July.

“As I speak to you, these suspects have been on suspension since July. They haven’t been receiving salaries and haven’t been on duty. In fact, from July till date, one can describe them not being members of the security outfit. We kept them within our reach and told the family that anytime they are ready, we will take the matter to court.

In further demonstration of our openness and readiness to be fair to everybody, we are going to now hand them over to the police, with or without the girl’s family. This is the essence of parading them, we are not shielding anybody.”
