Abia North Integrity Group (ANIG), a prominent group has urged the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to strictly adherence to the existing zoning formula in the state, saying it is the only guarantee for retainment of power with the party.
The group who warned sternly
against the abandonment of the zoning arrangement in the state, which according to them, started since 1999, argued that
deviation from the zoning arrangement, might tantamount to the PDP loosing the 2023 governorship poll to the opposition.
Although the next governorship election comes up in three years from now, the group pointed out that power should evidently return to Abia North Senatorial zone that first produced the governorship in 1999.
A statement issued after a joint meeting with Ikwuano/Umuahia Political Forum (IUPF)
in Umuahia, the state capital, at the weekend, endorsed by the group’s coordinator, Chief Kalu Kalu Idika-Agwu, warned that any attempt to pervert the existing Charter of Equity in the state would lead PDP to her Waterloo in 2023.
Furthermore, ANIG in the statement alleged that “some politicians of Ukwa Ngwa bloc of trying to perfect plans to abort the Abia Charter of Equity foisted on the state by the founding fathers.”
Moreso, the group disclosed that “some mercenaries working for some Ukwa Ngwa politicians are working to truncate the continued winning of the party in the state, even as the ANIG believed that the repudiation of the Abia Charter of Equity would reduce the strength of PDP in Abia State.
Meanwhile, Hillary Ndubuisi Ojukwu, the Abia State coordinator of IUPF, has said that the main reason PDP lost power at the federal level in 2015 was because some people arrogantly scorned the zoning principle existing then.
He said in Umuahia at the weekend that Abia might also be on the verge of suffering a similar fate unless “the promoters of the hegemonic and selfish campaign are called to order”.
“For the sake of unity and social cohesion of our state; for the sake of generations unborn who deserve a state founded and guided by the principle of equity and fairness, we urge the promoters of this divide and rule syndrome to desist from their evil plot in order not to set the state on fire”, he warned.
