Mixed reactions hit Umahi’s proposed chairmanship election amid COVID-19

The atmosphere in Ebonyi state is currently engulfed in gross panic over Governor David Umahi’s declaration of date for chairmanship election amid the battle against the subsisting Coronavirus disease pandemic.

Recall that the Governor,  through state media house, had posited during Ebonyi state stakeholders meeting held at Old government house Abakaliki, that his administration would in a fraction of time gather the State house of Assembly to review guidelines and modalities to conduct forthcoming  Ebonyi chairmanship Election.

This, however, did not sound palatable to the majority of the populace as tongues are beginning to wag, in wonderment, as to why the issue of election should be raised even as the air is filed with a feeling of insecurity, consequent on the outburst of the pandemic in the state.

One of the political bigwigs in in the state who spoke with
Famous Reporters over the phone on anonymity, bemoaned that “dispite Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the the whole world, Governor Umahi is busy talking about chairmanship election.”

The source advised that Governor Umahi should rather consider the number of cases recorded in the state, lamenting that local government election “should be the last option for now.”

However, the state’s media, has implored Ebonyi Independent Electoral Commission to provide modalities by which chairmanship election will be conducted within space of two weeks.

“Local government election will be commenced anytime from next week for the interest of the people”, he assured.” 

Although this idea of the government of the day is considered ideal by some persons as they applauded the decision of Governor Umahi, saying “the Governor has done what he surpose to do”, as they regretted that the COVID-19 had interrupted so many activities, hence social activities should commence.
