WASHINGTON – Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg was under-performing in several Super Tuesday states where he had spent heavily on staffing and advertising. 

Speaking to supporters in West Palm Beach, Bloomberg vowed to press ahead. 

“No matter how many delegates we win tonight, we have done something no one thought was possible,” the former New York City mayor said. “In just three months, we’ve gone from 1% in the polls to being a contender for the Democratic nomination.”

With more than 95% of precincts reported in Virginia, Vice President Joe Biden crushed his competitors, garnering 54% followed by 23% for Sen. Bernie Sanders and 11% for Elizabeth Warren. Bloomberg, a billionaire who is self-funding his campaigning, was in fourth place with 10%. Biden was also projected to win North Carolina and Alabama.

So far, Bloomberg won a single contest – the caucuses in the territory of American Samoa, which will award him 5 delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Larry Sabato, the director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said Bloomberg might not even clear the 15% threshold to secure any delegates in the state – a potential “embarrassment,” he wrote on Twitter.

“A hint to say bye-bye?” he quipped. Some Democrats have called on him to drop out of the race as former Vice President Joe Biden has surged back into the race.
