Mass Defection Rocks Abia: Labour Party Collapses into APC in Ukwa West

In a dramatic political twist that could reshape Abia’s power dynamics ahead of 2027, the Labour Party in Ukwa West appears to be unraveling as scores of its members abandon ship for the APC in a sweeping, high-impact defection.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a significant political breakthrough in Abia State following the mass defection of members of the Labour Party in Ukwa West Local Government Area.

The decampees, drawn from multiple wards across the LGA, were formally received on Saturday in Asa by the APC State Chairman, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, who described the development as “a clear indication of the growing acceptance and rising dominance of the APC in Abia State.”

Addressing the new entrants, Chukwu assured them of equal treatment within the party, emphasizing unity and inclusiveness.

“There is no discrimination in APC. What we require from everyone is commitment, hard work, and dedication to the collective goal of winning elections, taking over the Government House, and delivering good governance,” he stated.

The APC chairman expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in future elections, declaring that the party is fully mobilized to secure victories across the state.

He further reiterated the party’s determination to capture power in Abia, stressing that “no obstacle will stand in the way” of the APC’s mission to take over the Government House in Umuahia.

Chukwu also urged the defectors to fully integrate into the party structure and actively engage at the grassroots level, particularly within their polling units, to ensure electoral success in Ukwa West and beyond.

He assured them of the party’s support, noting that the leadership would provide the necessary framework and resources required to achieve victory.

Political observers say the mass defection signals a potential shift in Abia’s political landscape, weakening the Labour Party’s grip in the area while strengthening the APC’s grassroots base ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Labour Party in Ukwa West, Abia State, has suffered a major setback following the mass defection of its members to the APC. The move, described as a sign of APC’s growing dominance, is expected to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
