Man takes Secret to His Grave: Jarvis Dies in Prison Without Revealing Where Slain Teen Is

A grieving family has been left in agonising uncertainty after the man who admitted responsibility for a teenage girl’s death died in prison—without revealing the one detail that could bring them closure: where her remains can be found.

“Jarvis Butts, who pleaded guilty to killing 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, has died in prison without revealing the location of her remains. The case leaves her family without closure, as authorities continue to seek answers about her disappearance.”

A disturbing chapter in a high-profile criminal case has taken a tragic turn after 43-year-old Jarvis Butts, who pleaded guilty to the killing of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, was found dead in prison before disclosing the location of her remains.

Na’Ziyah was reported missing in January 2024 after she failed to return home from school in Detroit. Her sudden disappearance sparked widespread concern and an intensive search effort, but she has never been found.

Authorities later charged Butts in connection with her death. He subsequently pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and, on March 12, was sentenced to between 35 and 60 years in prison.

Prosecutors revealed that Butts had been “grooming” the teenager since 2022 and that the two met on the day she vanished.

Investigators also stated that Na’Ziyah was reportedly pregnant at the time, with evidence suggesting Butts could have been responsible.
Further details from the investigation pointed to troubling online activity prior to the incident. According to prosecutors, Butts conducted searches related to “abortion,” “abortion pills,” and other harmful substances, raising serious concerns about premeditation.
As part of a plea agreement, Butts was required to disclose the location of Na’Ziyah’s body—a condition prosecutors described as “critical” to the case and to providing closure for her family. However, he failed to provide that information.

On March 26, just two weeks after his sentencing, prison officials confirmed that Butts was found dead in custody. Authorities believe he died by suicide.

While prosecutors indicated that some useful information had been obtained during the investigation, key questions remain unanswered. Most notably, the whereabouts of Na’Ziyah’s body are still unknown.

For her family, the lack of closure continues to deepen the tragedy. Without answers, they remain unable to properly lay their daughter to rest, as the search for truth—and justice—remains incomplete.
