The Caretaker Committee Chairiman of Afkipo South Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Mr Okechukwu Ogbuagu, has said that issues of public health could not be compromised on the altar of Chief Abia Onyike’s blackmail against the Government.

FamousReporters reports that Onyike was a former Commissioner for Information in Ebonyi State.

The forner Commissioner recently alleged that the Governor David Umahi-led administration was after him and had ordered his isolation for 14 days, to silence him forever from criticising him.

The council boss, Ogbuagu, however, added that the State Government’s bid to isolate him for the COVID-19 test, was in the best interest of Ebonyians.

Ogbuagu, who observed that the same COVID-19 lockdown laws in the state, which compels Onyike to undergo the test, were operational in all the states of the federation, alleging that the former Commissioner had embarked on several interstate travels within the period of the lockdown.

He stated in a statement issued on Sunday night, saying, “The knowledge that he (Onyike) has embarked on inter-State travels without having subjected himself to check prompted me as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Afikpo South Local Government Area, to write and express concerns to the Ebonyi State Anti-COVID-19 Executive Committee, which has the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State as the Chairman.

He added, “The Chairman of the Committee issued optional directives to address the situation being that Mr Abia Onyike should, subject himself to any of the three isolation and holding centres in Afikpo South Local Government Area for 14 days, or go into self isolation in his house in Abakaliki for 14 days; and in addition, subject himself to COVID-19 test in Ebonyi State, or subject himself to COVID-19 test outside Ebonyi State.

“Therefore, public health cannot be compromised on the altar of your fickle blackmail.

“Nobody is after Abia and he knows that. These tantrums cannot shield him from being tested here or elsewhere. Let him tell us the State and Centre he wants to undergo the test so that we can send observers. That is all that matters to us and no blackmail can deter us from our resolve to protect our people from the COVID-19 scourge.”
