Lagos Police Warn Against Protests Over Oworonshoki Demolition: ‘We’ll Resist Any Attempt to Disrupt Peace’ — CP Jimoh

Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warns against planned protests over the Oworonshoki demolition, vowing that the police will resist any attempt to disrupt peace around the Third Mainland Bridge and other strategic areas in Lagos.

Following the demolition of illegal settlements around the country’s longest bridge, the Third Mainland Bridge, tensions have risen in parts of Lagos as some individuals and youth groups in Oworonshoki reportedly threatened protests and disruption of economic activities.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has issued a stern warning, stating that security operatives will “strongly resist any attempt to cause disruption or threaten public order” within the Lagos metropolis.

He made this declaration during a personal patrol of the 11.8-kilometre Third Mainland Bridge on Monday morning, according to a report by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP).

CP Jimoh assured that the Lagos State Police Command has carried out extensive deployments across key strategic areas of the city — including Third Mainland Bridge, Maryland, Ojota, Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ikeja, Bagada, and the Lekki Toll Gate — to forestall any unlawful assembly or breakdown of law and order.

While addressing journalists during his patrol at Iyana-Oworonshoki, CP Jimoh cautioned:

“No person or group should think it is wise to engage in acts that threaten the safety of lives and property. Anybody wishing to organize a peaceful protest must follow due process. What we have seen is not a protest but an attempt to cause disruption and public disorder — and such actions will not be tolerated.”

The Commissioner emphasized that the Third Mainland Bridge, a vital economic artery for Lagos and Nigeria, must never be obstructed under any guise. He noted that thousands of people, including those in medical emergencies and those engaged in daily commercial activities, rely on the bridge for smooth transit.

“We have made massive deployments since last night to ensure that no one takes the law into their own hands or disrupts the peace that Lagosians are enjoying,” he stated.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the recent demolition of illegal structures in Oworonshoki, CP Jimoh maintained that the police and government acted within the law, stressing that the cleared areas had been “criminal hideouts.”

“We have raided several areas and recovered dangerous weapons. The government’s action was justified. Genuine occupants have been compensated, and the process was covered by the media,” he explained.

The Commissioner also issued a direct warning to Omoyele Sowore and other activists he described as “mischief-makers,” cautioning them to steer clear of Lagos.

“Anyone hiding under the guise of activism or protest to cause mayhem will be treated as a criminal. Lagos is peaceful, and we intend to keep it that way,” he affirmed.
