JUST IN: Popular Actor dies, Nollywood mourns again

Popular Nollywood actor, Olusegun Akinremi has joined his ancestors at the age of 70.

The death of Akinremi popularly known as Chief Kanran was made public by movie executive and producer, Seun Oloketuyi.

Chief Kanran was a household name in the Yoruba film industry, celebrated for his unique style, humour, and commanding performances in numerous stage plays and movies over several decades.

Oloketuyi disclosed this in a post which he shared on his Instagram page with the caption: “Popular actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, died Friday morning.”

It will be recalled that in an interview granted in 2020, Chief Kanran said he stepped away from the movie industry over internal politics bedevilling it.

In his words:
“Some people in the industry see people like me as a threat because I will not do anything that is not professional and that has made some people to be upset with me,” Chief Kanran had said.

Chief Kanran was a celebrated figure in the Yoruba film industry, famed for his refined elegance, love for luxury, sharp humour, and commanding performances that graced stage plays and movies for decades.

He began his career on stage before moving into television and film, gaining early recognition through his appearances in a popular NTA drama series.

His prominence grew further with memorable roles in numerous Yoruba films, often portraying kings, chiefs, and village elders.

However, a colleague of the deceased actor, Jaiye Kuti, had announced the sad news in a post via her Instagram page on Thursday, August 14, 2025, disclosing that the late actor died of high Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

The film star expressed sadness over the demise, stating she is pained and prayed that God would console the deceased’s family.

Kuti’s post, thus contradicts Seun’s who stated that the veteran died this morning.
