*As he confirms arrest of suspect
The President-general of Isiama Afara-Ukwu, in Ibeku autonomous community, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, has confirmed the arrest of the alleged mentally deranged man, Ibekwe Augustine James who murdered his younger sister, Chinonso Nwabali and butchered her twin children.
This is even as the police have confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody at the Central Police Station (CPS), Umuahia.
Famousreporters.com who broke the news reported earlier on Wednesday’s afternoon that Nwabali, after perpetrating the abominable act, was seen by one of the youths while dragging his sister’s lifeless in their compound, and quickly disappeared into thin air.
His whereabouts was still unknown, as the police, in collaboration with some men of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the youths of the community ransacked the community, as well as the surrounding bushes, but their efforts were futile.
It was, however, unbeknownst to them that the suspect was airborne to his maternal home, in Imo State, where it was said that he alleged that he was driven away from the community by his people.
In a bid to reconcile him with his people, his unsuspecting maternal home relatives decided to accompany him back to his country home, at Afara-Ibeku, with a view to reconciling him with his people.
It would be recalled that there have been cries of sorrows and agonies in the land of Afara-Ibeku, in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, following the bloodbath that occurred in the community.
Famousreporters.com reports that the devastated incident took place on the night of Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at about 3: am, as the youngman who is said to be suffering from a brain fag in recent times, killed her younger sister in cold blood.
He also murdered the late sister’s twin children, a boy and a girl, dismembered their bodies and buried them in shallow graves within his surroundings.
According to reports, the suspect was sighted by the youths of his community, dragging the lifeless body of his sister, perhaps in an attempt to lay her to rest as he already did to her twin children, whom it is speculated were his first victims.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Charity Uwakwe of Famous Reporters, today, Thursday, February 20, the President-general, Mr. Obiuto Ogubunka who confirmed the arrest of the fleeing suspect, who was restored to his home was subsequently turned-in to the community up learning what evil he had committed.
According to Ogubunka, the police who did not want to deploy a jungle kind of justice decided to hand him over to the authorities.
Meanwhile, the President-general also attested to the extant mental instability of the suspect, saying:
Mr. Obiuto Ogubunka, the President-general of Isiama Afara-Ukwu, in Afara-Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
“Actually, the young man, I don’t know him too well but I know that he’s not all that okay. Because since he decided to do that type of thing, the young man’s senses are not okay, because a normal person cannot do that type of thing. Just look at a brother that went ahead and killed his younger sister and her two twin children.”
Asked whether the deceased younger sister was married or single, President-general said:
“She wasn’t married.”
On how he deduced that he had committed a crime and his resolution to escape from the anger of the community members, the President-general responded thus:
“That young man is not complete. I know him, his senses are not together. I’ve seen him thrice even when he’s talking, you’ll know that he’s not together, they’re not right.”
Asked how they were able to arrest him after the initial efforts of both the DSS, Police and the youths proved abortive, Ogubunka explained that:
“Actually, he ran to his maternal home in Imo State and told them that his family sent him away. So, they decided to take him down to the village yesterday probably to intervene on his matter. It was then that the villagers told the maternal people what happened. They now said, okay, that means the boy lied to them so the community now handed him over to the police, because they cannot not take laws into their hands. It’s only the police that can handle the situation. So, it was the maternal home people that turned him into the community and then before they took him to the police station.”
Asked their next line of action is in view of that, he said:
“Actually, it is a murder case, so we don’t know how the police want to handle the situation, because it’s now in the government’s hands. The government will decide on what to do.
“This incident happened in my community, Umuokogbuo-Ndagbo in Isiama-Afara.”
Meanwhile, the President-general further explained that Isiama-Afara Ukwu comprised four villages: Etiti-Nabu, Ndagbo, Mgboko and Umuabali”.
He, therefore, used the medium to advise youths of his community to embrace the western education and be able to engage themselves in gainful activities.
“Everybody should acquire education and engage himself in things that will be profitable to them”, he advised.
