COVID-19 PANDEMIC: “We don’t want to starve our people to death while keeping them away from Coronavirus”… John Okiyi

Those were the words of the Abia state commissioner for information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu while highlighting the various palliative measures deployed by the state government.

Addressing newsmen after monitoring the level of compliance of the sit-at-home order by the state government, Chief Okiyi kalu said the state Government would use the period of the lockdown to fumigate key areas around the state to ensure Abia is completely eradicated of the virus.    

He explained that in spite of the existing lockdown  disclosed that the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu had earlier procured some food materials which would be distributed to the vulnerable in the state, as the distribution of the items he said, would commence within the week.

“Our own lockdown is with a human face, we don’t want to starve our people to death while keeping them away from coronavirus. That is why you continue to see movements here and there.

“The Governor, early enough procured some food materials which we want to distribute to those we consider vulnerable and in our definition, the first group is those who are above 70, the second group will be Abia children and the third group will be our women who depend on what they make daily to survive. We will commence distribution of these support materials within the week”

Meanwhile, he urge the people to improve on the lockdown order, while assuring that Governor Ikpeazu had put in place adequate measures that would nurse any infected person with the virus back to life and advised the people to adhere to all precautionary measures in the prevention of the disease.

“With regard to the war against Covid-19, we are taking a- two strong approach to it: one approach is to ensure that the virus is prevented from coming to Abia state, the second approach is to ensure that we have a system in place to control the spread and nurse our people back to life if ever it comes to this state.
On this what we have done so far is to tend to lockdown our borders and secondly, we have prepared our isolated facilities in Amachara, at FMC and also at ABSUTH”

However, he urged Abians to adhere strictly to the lockdown order, as it would help health workers deepen the state Government efforts in keeping the state continuously free from Coronavirus.

Similarly, the Chief Medical Director, Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center, Umuahia, Dr. Enwereji Jamike lamented that Abia State had not felt the impact of the Federal Government since the fight against the Covid 19 global pandemic.

He used the medium to call on Nigeria center for disease control (NCDC) to work in collaboration with the state health team on Covid 19.
