COVID-19: New Umuahia Sports Club President Charges Members, Abians To Obey Ikpeazu’s Order, As Club Shuts down

In line with the lockdown order of Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu as one of the security measures to militate against the outbreak of Coronavirus disease in the state, the Management of Umuahia Sports Club have ordered a total shutdown of the club in order to keep at bay the spread of the virus in the state.

Interacting with Newsmen shortly after the election at the club house, in Umuahia, the newly elected President, Mr. Daniel Ikechukwu who disclosed that in strict adherence to government’s stipulated policies, the club had adopted a new method of greeting one another, enjoined members to maintain social distancing as instructed by the government, in order to enable the latter effectively fight against the deadly disease.

Mr. Daniel Ikechukwu who defeated his counterpart with just one vote at the election, charged members and all Abians to adhere to the Governor’s policy of cleanliness and strict avoidance of public activities and all forms of social gatherings, while emphasising the need to frequently wash their hands, as well as sanitize them as recommended by the government.

“As you can see, outside there, we have sanitizer and washing basin, before you come inside you wash your hands and sanitizer them and we have taken the measure of ending constant hand shaking and have taken another mode of greeting so we are dropping the hand shake.”

He regretted that the total lockdown in the state would in no doubts deter members from frequenting the place but maintained that the decision of the government must be abided by despite all odds.

“At the mean time, it is going to deter a lot of people from coming here but as the government has directed, when ever the Corona virus has settled down, we will come back, if the state says we should shout down the club in line with governor Ikpeazu’s directives, I will do whatever he said”.

Furthermore, the President assured members of the club of an all inclusive administration, while calling for their support to enable him make relevant impacts on the club, noting “as I have been elected as the president, I promise to carry everybody along and to rebuild and regenerating the club.

“Most things here are going out of hand  due to age long and many other things. So we are going to uplift  the club to a greater height”.

Also speaking, Barr. Kingsley Osuagwu who emerged as the General Secretary of the club, express euphoria over his position in the great club, describing it as an opportunity to serve his members.

“I feel so delighted for  being elected as  the General Secretary of this  club. It’s an opportunity to serve my club members and am very happy and I’m ready to serve them to the best of my knowledge.”

K. O. Osuagwu amidst optimism, called for unity among members, insisting that same will enable them tackle the various challenges facing the club.

“The  truth is that there are so many challenges, my promise is that having been elected today as the new General Secretary, together with the members of executive committee we are going to work jointly to ensure that the affairs of this club is lifted.

“We are going to do several amendment so that the club will be up to what it ought to be, the way it being known in the past. I can assure you in few months to come, if you come to this club you will be nursing to be a member.”

Meanwhile, Chief Lawrence Ifediora, the immediate past President advised his Successor to accord all and sundry an outstanding sense of belonging and embrace diligence in his service to the club, reiterating that “this place is our second home. Whenever we come here, he should see everyone as his children and take everybody equal not to discriminate against anybody.”
