It is often said that “health is wealth,” and the ancient Spartans believed that “a healthy mind resides in a healthy body.” These timeless principles underscore a vital truth: personal and community health should never be treated as a privilege for the wealthy. Access to essential healthcare must remain a fundamental right for all.
It is against this backdrop that Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, popularly known as Ofuji, through the Chima Anyaso Foundation (CAF), has consistently championed free community medical interventions across Abia State. Over the years, the Foundation’s periodic Free Medical Outreaches have brought essential healthcare services directly to underserved populations, saving lives and improving grassroots well-being.
Community-Based Health Intervention refers to a structured effort, policy, or programme aimed at improving mental and physical health at the population level—particularly within rural communities. Such interventions may be spearheaded by government agencies, NGOs, or private foundations, and often include vaccination campaigns, health screenings, food and water supplementation, and disease-prevention awareness.
Driven by passion and humanitarian conviction, Dr. Anyaso has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to these interventions across Abia, especially in Bende LGA. His foundation continues to provide comprehensive health support that bridges critical gaps in a region where access to medical care is often limited.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Anyaso, through CAF, distributed food supplies and essential medical materials across Abia State—Bende LGA inclusive—to cushion the effect of the lockdown on vulnerable households. This gesture, many residents noted, was “not merely philanthropy, but an expression of genuine concern for the people’s welfare.”
On several occasions, the Foundation, working in collaboration with government agencies, has delivered vital medical services to some of the most remote communities in Bende. These interventions have offered lifelines to families who would otherwise have no access to primary healthcare. Notably, the Foundation partnered with the Precious Sight Foundation to sponsor a Free Eye Care programme in Igbere, benefiting all communities in Bende LGA. Hundreds of residents were screened and provided with corrective eyeglasses at no cost.
In addition to these efforts, CAF has executed multiple humanitarian relief initiatives, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most active philanthropic bodies in the region.
The Foundation is also finalising plans to roll out a comprehensive Deworming Exercise for pupils in primary and secondary schools across Bende as they return from the holidays and the Iriji Festival. Free HIV testing and counselling programmes are equally being planned for various communities in the LGA.
Indeed, Ofuji cares—and his actions continue to speak louder than words.
