The leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has utter optimism about his unavoidable release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu gave this assurance in a closed door meeting with the management of Famousreporters.com, yesterday, Friday, September 13, pointing out that frantic efforts are being made towards securing his anticipated release from his prolonged detention.
The behind the scene meeting took place at the DSS headquarters, Abuja.
Speaking further, Kanu who reiterated that the freedom fighting outfit would stop at nothing in ensuring a peaceful coexistence in the Southeast region of the country, advised members to maintain tranquility and remain law-abiding.
Asked when he hopes to be released, he said:
“I’m coming out very soon. I don’t want to state a particular date but I’m confident that frantic efforts are being made to ensure that I’m released.”
It would be recalled that the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe had, in July, 2024, revealed that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had consented to the biddings of the federal government of Nigeria as regards his anticipated release.
This was the aftermath of the meeting of South East Senators led by Abaribe with the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Prince Lateef Fagbemi in relation to the release of the renowned leader of freedom fighters in Igbo nation.
Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senator representing Abia South made this known on Wednesday when he led other Senators from the South East region of Nigeria to a meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, to demand the release of the detained IPOB leader.
Abaribe, who is also a former Senate Minority Leader disclosed that he had already met with Kanu at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday ahead of today’s meeting.
Although the meeting was held behind closed doors Abaribe, who spoke on behalf of the other lawmakers, said he was optimistic that the AGF would persuade the Federal Government to heed the call for Kanu’s release.
He maintained that the continued detention of the IPOB leader was responsible for the rising insecurity in the South East region.
The meeting between the lawmakers and the AGF came barely one day after all the Governors from the South East region resolved to approach President Bola Tinubu to beg for Kanu’s freedom
On whether they’ve met with Kanu to know whether he’ll accept the conditional release or not, “He said, “On behalf of the South East Senators, I met with Nnamdi Kanu myself on Monday and today is Wednesday. I met with him between 2pm and 3pm on Monday and he is very supportive of our move and he’s ready to accept any condition from the Federal Government.“
Abaribe added, “Political leaders, business people and everybody in the South East is concerned about the release of Nnamdi Kanu, knowing fully well that it is the fulcrum regarding the insecurity in the region.
“All the criminals and all the people going around causing mayhem in the South East have all said that it’s because Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being held, and we know that’s not the truth, it is just that we have gotten to the point where people are now hijacking the legitimate call for his release and turning it into something that has led to death, destruction of properties and so many other indescribable mayhem going on in the South East and so we came to meet with the minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation because we know that at the end of the day everything that happens in the legal space will eventually come to his office and we came to appeal to him to help us let Mr. President know that all the leaders in the South East feel that the release of Nnamdi Kanu will help in dousing all the tensions and everything that is going on in the South East and we are certain that his duty as the AGF also gives him the powers of making sure that litigations don’t continue and the sufferings of the people of South east continue.
“As you know that several other groups in the South East including the governors of the South East have all been making the same kind of plea. We think that this will help us to bring to an end all the insecurity in the South East,” he said.
However, grapevine told Famous Reporters that the presiding judge, Justice yinka had bluntly refused to pay attention to the various arguments raised by the Lawyers of the renowned freedom fighter.
