Amnesty Int’l: FENRAD Reaffirms Campaign Against Insecurity, Gross H’Rights Abuses in S/E

By Charity Uwakwe

Enugu,Nigeria-Following the recent Amnesty International report highlighting the alarming rise in insecurity and gross human rights violations in South East Nigeria, the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has reiterated its unwavering commitment towards championing peace, security, and human rights in the region.

FENRAD stated this in a release signed by Comrd. Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the Executive Director and made available to famousreporters.com today, Saturday, August 16, stressing that FENRAD would not relent in her support victims of violence and human rights abuses with legal aid and psychosocial services.

FENRAD regrets that the key drivers of the worsening insecurity in the region include “the complex roles played by both state and non-state actors. State actors, through excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests, and prolonged detentions, have contributed to heightened tensions”.

The release read in detail…

The Amnesty International report paints a troubling picture of escalating violence, including targeted attacks on civilians, unlawful detentions, extrajudicial killings, and systemic abuses by various actors within the zone. Key drivers of the worsening insecurity include the complex roles played by both state and non-state actors. State actors, through excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests, and prolonged detentions, have contributed to heightened tensions. Simultaneously, non-state actors, including armed groups and vigilante factions, have engaged in violent confrontations that undermine peace and stability.

A significant factor exacerbating insecurity in the South East is the incarceration of the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose detention has deeply polarized communities and fueled unrest. The prolonged imprisonment has intensified feelings of marginalization and has been cited by many as a catalyst for increased militancy and violent responses within the zone.

In response, FENRAD emphasizes the urgent need for collaborative efforts among government agencies, civil society organizations, community leaders, and international bodies to address these issues comprehensively. FENRAD’s ongoing campaigns aim to:

Advocate for the protection of fundamental human rights and the rule of law;

Support victims of violence and human rights abuses with legal aid and psychosocial services;

Promote peaceful dialogue and community reconciliation initiatives;

Hold perpetrators of rights violations accountable through transparent judicial processes;

Engage policymakers to implement sustainable security measures that respect human dignity.

FENRAD’s Executive Director comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor stated:
“The findings of Amnesty International reaffirm the reality on the ground—our people continue to suffer untold hardships due to insecurity and rights violations. The actions of both state and non-state actors, alongside the incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have significantly contributed to the current crisis. FENRAD remains steadfast in its mission to amplify the voices of the vulnerable and to work tirelessly towards restoring peace and justice in the South East.”

FENRAD calls on all stakeholders, including the Nigerian government, security agencies, and international partners, to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and promoting human rights. The path to lasting peace lies in respect for justice, inclusivity, and the protection of every citizen’s rights.
