Abia at 34: FENRAD Calls for Greater Transparency, Citizens’ Participation

As Abia State celebrates her 34th anniversary, FENRAD has felicitated with Abians and the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti and commended the latter for the extant development strides in the state.

Umuahia, Abia State — The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), a leading civil society organization committed to promoting good governance, environmental justice, and human rights, has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of Abia State as the state marks its 34th anniversary.

According to a release signed by Comrd. Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the Executive Director and issued to Famousreporters.com, today, August 28, FENRAD recognized and lauded the efforts of the present administration under Governor Alex Otti in delivering infrastructural development across various sectors of the state.

The release acknowledged that recent projects in road construction, urban renewal, and healthcare revitalization as a reflection of a renewed commitment of the Labour Party (LP) government to addressing the long-standing developmental deficits that had plagued the state.

The release read in detail:

“We acknowledge the positive steps taken so far by the administration in repositioning Abia for growth and sustainability,” said Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director of FENRAD. “The strides in infrastructure, particularly in Aba and Umuahia, are commendable and signal a move towards restoring the pride of the state as ‘God’s Own State.’”

However, FENRAD also underscores the need for deepened democratic governance, emphasizing the importance of proactive information disclosure, fiscal transparency, and citizens’ participation in policy formulation and implementation. As a state with immense human and natural resource potential, Abia’s progress must be driven by inclusive governance that places the people at the heart of decision-making.

“We urge the state government to institutionalize mechanisms for open governance, including regular town hall meetings, accessible budget documents, and freedom of information compliance. Citizens must not only benefit from development but also have a say in shaping it,” Nwafor added.

As Abia enters a new chapter, FENRAD remains committed to working collaboratively with government institutions, civil society, and communities to ensure that development is people-centered, environmentally sustainable, and rooted in equity and justice.
