As Ebonyi residents battle hunger in the face of the current Coronavirus pandemic State, an humanitarian group, De Norsemen Kclub International, on Sunday night, donated 190 bags of 25kg rice and 200 cartons of Indomie, to Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
This is even as the group noted that both Coronavirus pandemic and its attendant aftermaths (especially hunger), were capable of killing anybody, saying the two could not be treated with a wave of hand.
According to the socour group, both the Federal and Ebonyi State Governments were doing a lot to ensure the Coronavirus pandemic, currently ravaging the globe, was contained in the country and in the state.
It added that the idea behind the gesture was to assist both the federal and the state governments, in what they were doing to arrest the virus, and to mitigate its effects on the lives of poor Nigerians and Ebonyians, respectively.
Making the donation at Onicha Council Headquarters, on Sunday night, South-East Zonal Director of the club, Comrade Okenwa Uka, said the idea behind the gesture to reach out to the most vulnerable and the poorest of the poor in the area.
He added that the organisation set up the Anti-COVID-19 Committee to sensitise the masses on the need to take heed to the precautionary measures spelt out by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
He said, “The leadership of the club thought it wise to set up Anti-COVID-19 Committee, just like the State and Federal Government, in order to ensure that it reach out to the most vulnerable publics in the society. The idea is to sensitise the people on the need to take heed to the precautionary measures of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and that of the state government, because it he who stays alive that can tell story of how we were able to defeat the virus.
“Having looked at the situation in the country, our club thought it wise to take this bold step in order to visit local government areas in Ebonyi State. But where we are today, that’s Onicha Local Government Area, special for us, because it is the best Council area in Ebonyi State.
“The quality of the traditional rulers we have here is second to none. The Chairman, Engr Felix Igboke, since he assumed the leadership of the Council, we can all attest to the fact that, it had improved infrastructurally. And the Chairman, being a young man who underwent the tutelage of training in the area, understands the pains, the people pass through daily here.
“He has extended help to several other persons, even outside the council and as a result, we said no matter how little the items we are coming to give to the people, it’s better than coming with nothing. Here we are targeting the poor of the poorest and here we ve over a hundred bags of 25kg rice and two hundred cartons of Indomie. All we are asking is that let this little token of ours get to the target publics. Our thinking is that COVID-19 cannot be fought, without fighting Hunger 20.”
Receiving the items on behalf of the Council boss, Engr Felix Igboke, the Coordinator of Onicha Development Centre, Mr Chima Amanta said; ” We have other good spirited individuals from these local government area, who have in one way or the other, helped our people during this health crisis period. The idea is to support what both the Federal Government and State Governments are doing, in the fight against the Coronavirus.”
