Atuma Highlights Past Achievements, Promises Rural Development Ahead of 2027

Poor rural roads, farmers’ struggles and the demand for visible government presence have taken centre stage as Emeka Atuma reflects on his past achievements and outlines his development priorities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Emeka Atuma has highlighted his achievements as a former representative of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency and identified rural road improvement, agricultural development, federal-state collaboration and grassroots engagement as priorities for addressing community needs in Abia ahead of the 2027 elections.

Rep. Emeka Atuma has highlighted his achievements during his representation of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency between 2003 and 2007, outlining plans to prioritise rural infrastructure, agricultural development and grassroots engagement as the 2027 political season approaches.

Atuma made the remarks during an interactive programme on Love FM, where he reflected on his previous experience in the House of Representatives and discussed the development challenges facing communities across Abia Central Senatorial District.

He recalled establishing a functional constituency office during his tenure, describing it as an organised platform for effective representation and engagement with constituents.

According to him, the office attracted commendation from the then Chief of Staff to the Abia State Government, Chief T.A. Orji, who reportedly expressed satisfaction with the arrangement and promised to support the initiative.

Atuma Prioritises Grassroots Engagement

The former federal lawmaker said effective representation requires regular interaction with the people and a clear understanding of their needs.

He disclosed plans to continue visiting the 108 electoral wards across Abia Central Senatorial District to assess community challenges, identify priority projects and develop practical solutions to problems affecting residents.

Atuma explained that direct engagement would help him understand the specific needs of different communities and identify interventions capable of producing measurable results.

Rural Roads, Farmers Top Development Priorities

Reflecting on his engagements in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, Atuma expressed concern over the poor condition of rural roads and what he described as the limited presence of government in some of the communities he visited.

He noted that many residents depend on farming for their livelihoods, making accessible rural roads essential to their economic activities.

According to him, opening and improving roads leading to farmlands would help farmers transport their produce to markets, reduce transportation difficulties and create better economic opportunities for rural communities.

Atuma also recalled the warm reception he received during his visits, noting that residents demonstrated their hospitality by presenting farm produce, including plantains and vegetables.

He described the gesture as a sign of the people’s generosity and their willingness to engage with those seeking to represent their interests.

He pledged to pursue practical interventions that would address the immediate needs of rural communities, particularly in infrastructure and agricultural development.

Atuma Eyes Federal Agencies for Community Projects

Atuma also expressed his intention to explore opportunities for collaboration with relevant federal government agencies, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to attract development projects to underserved communities.

He maintained that effective representation should go beyond political promises and involve identifying government programmes, institutional resources and development opportunities that could improve the living conditions of the people.

During the radio programme, a caller raised concerns about the perceived absence of government presence in parts of Osisioma Ngwa, appealing for urgent intervention to address the area’s infrastructure challenges.

The concerns highlighted the need for sustained engagement between government institutions, elected representatives and rural communities to ensure that development initiatives reflect the needs of residents.

Atuma Calls for Federal-State Collaboration on Roads

Addressing road infrastructure, Atuma emphasised the importance of cooperation between the federal and state governments in delivering development projects.

He cited the Ikot Ekpene Road project as an example of the need for collaboration between different levels of government.

Atuma acknowledged the Federal Government’s efforts towards the reconstruction of the road and commended the Abia State Government for its contributions to the project.

He also maintained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had demonstrated concern for Abia State, urging residents to support the President and stressing the importance of cooperation between both levels of government in advancing development.

Atuma further argued that the removal of the fuel subsidy had increased the resources available to governors for development at the state and community levels.

He referenced reported expressions of support for the President’s policies by the Abia State administration during a Channels Television programme, suggesting that constructive engagement between the state and federal governments could create further development opportunities for Abia.

Former Lawmaker Recalls Role in Constitutional Reform

On local government administration, Atuma recalled his involvement in legislative efforts towards constitutional reform.

He stated that he was the first person to move a motion on the floor of the House of Representatives for constitutional amendment on May 26, 2006.

He also discussed the longstanding challenges surrounding local government administration in Nigeria, highlighting the responsibilities of state governments in addressing issues affecting local councils.

Atuma referenced President Tinubu’s decision to seek judicial intervention at the Supreme Court on matters relating to local government autonomy, describing the development within the broader context of efforts to address challenges facing grassroots administration.

2027: Accountability and Development Take Centre Stage

The interactive programme brought attention to concerns raised by residents over rural infrastructure, access to farmlands and the need for a stronger government presence in underserved communities.

These issues remain central to the debate on grassroots development and the expectations residents have of their political representatives.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum, Atuma’s remarks have placed rural development, agricultural support, accountability and community engagement among the issues he says should guide effective representation.

The extent to which these priorities translate into tangible development outcomes will remain an important consideration for communities seeking improved infrastructure and better economic opportunities.
