Enugu Govt Rescues 16-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Raped by Father, Banished by Community

A 16-year-old girl’s ordeal has prompted government intervention in Enugu State, with authorities stepping in to protect her after allegations of sexual abuse and banishment from her community.

Enugu State Government has taken a 16-year-old girl into protective care after she was reportedly sexually abused by her father and banished from her community.

The Enugu State Government has taken a 16-year-old girl into protective custody after she was reportedly sexually abused by her father and subsequently banished from her community in Aninri Local Government Area.

The teenager, identified as Chinaza, is receiving government protection following public outrage over the disturbing incident in Nnewe community.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, announced the intervention in a social media post, assuring the public that the girl was safe and would receive the necessary care and support.

Enih said the government was prioritising Chinaza’s physical health, emotional well-being and overall welfare as she begins the process of recovery from the reported abuse.

According to the commissioner, the state would provide psychosocial support to help the teenager cope with the trauma and rebuild her sense of safety and security.

She also condemned any attempt to blame, reject or punish children who experience sexual abuse, stressing that victims deserve protection, compassion, dignity and justice.

Government Moves to Apprehend Suspect

Enih disclosed that efforts were underway to apprehend the girl’s father, who was reportedly on the run following the allegations.

She said the ministry was working with relevant authorities to ensure that the case received the necessary attention and that justice was pursued.

The commissioner also expressed appreciation to members of the public whose intervention helped bring the incident to the government’s attention.

“The Ministry sincerely appreciates members of the public who raised the alarm and brought the matter to the attention of the government. Your voices matter, and together, we can build a society where every child is safe, valued and protected,” she said.

Enih reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to strengthening child protection mechanisms and ensuring that children who experience abuse receive appropriate care, support and protection.

The case has also drawn attention to the importance of reporting suspected child abuse and ensuring that victims are protected from further harm, stigma and rejection.

Authorities are expected to pursue the reported allegations against the girl’s father while the teenager receives the support needed for her recovery.
