GOMEP-NG Unveils New Identity, Says ‘True Spirit of Journalism’ Must Be Restored
At a time when public trust in the media is under growing pressure, GOMEP-NG says journalism must return to its core values of truth, courage, fairness and accountability.
The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has unveiled a new corporate identity and logo as part of efforts to strengthen professional journalism, promote media independence and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s digital media space.
ABUJA — The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has unveiled a new corporate identity and logo as it begins a renewed drive to strengthen professional journalism and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s digital media space.
The new identity, according to the Guild, represents the emergence of a new generation of young, fearless and bold Nigerian editors and publishers.
GOMEP-NG said the new generation is committed to promoting credible journalism, professional standards and responsible media practice.
The move comes at a time when the media industry is changing rapidly. As digital platforms continue to reshape news consumption, questions about media independence, credibility and accountability have also become more prominent.
The Guild said journalism must remain independent and focused on the public interest.
It expressed concern that some established media practitioners have, in recent years, become closely aligned with political interests. According to the Guild, such alignment could weaken public trust and threaten the independence of journalism.
However, GOMEP-NG said its approach would go beyond political affiliations. Instead, the Guild said it would focus on strengthening the institutions, values and professional standards that support responsible journalism.
Its key areas of focus include editorial leadership, credible journalism, public accountability, capacity development, media innovation, equity, collaboration and national development.
The Guild also stressed that online journalism must serve a wider purpose.
According to GOMEP-NG, digital media platforms should not merely be used to promote political personalities or fuel partisan battles. Rather, they should provide credible information and hold public institutions and individuals in positions of authority accountable.
The adoption of the new logo, therefore, was described as more than a change in visual identity.
The Guild said it represents a new direction for digital journalism and reflects its commitment to professional excellence.
GOMEP-NG further said the new generation of editors and publishers would challenge practices capable of undermining journalism while promoting ethical reporting, innovation and constructive engagement with government, institutions and citizens.
The Guild maintained that Nigeria needs a media industry that can combine courage with responsibility.
It said journalists must be prepared to speak truth to power while remaining guided by facts, fairness and the public interest.
To achieve this, GOMEP-NG said it would continue to build a professional community where editors and publishers can collaborate, improve their skills and contribute to national development.
The Guild’s leadership described the new identity as the beginning of a renewed chapter for the organisation.
It expressed confidence that Nigeria’s digital media space can become stronger when journalism is driven by professional standards rather than political patronage.
“The true spirit of journalism must not be lost. It must be protected, strengthened and passed on to the next generation,” the Guild said.
